Questionnaire analysis

In this document, I will be analysing the results of my questionnaire, which regarded the Folk genre
but more broadly, music videos and what people like to see in music videos.

The first question, which I asked

was “What is your age?” This
was to find out what target
audience I would aim for, based
on the age group which gave me
the most responses. The age
group 16 -20 give me the most
responses (91.7%) and therefore
I am going to aim my music video
at this group because they seem
the most interested in the Folk
genre. However, 8.1% of people
were over 31+, meaning that
there is an older audience
interested and therefore this
allows me to aim my music video
at more people and to do this I
will try incorporate things like
props and costume which most
ages will be able to relate to.
The second question I asked was
“What is your gender?” I decided
to use this question because it
will give me an insight into what
gender I should be aiming my
music video at. Due to the fact
that 50% of my responses came
from males and 45.8% of my
responses came from females, I
would like to aim my music video
at both genders because this is a
clear indication that a similar
amount of males and females
share the same interest in the
Folk genre.

The third question “On a scale of

1 to 5, how much do you enjoy
watching music videos?” was to
grasp an idea of whether people
often watch music videos. This
would benefit me because it
would either deem a music video
pointless or integral. From the
range of response I got, I can
infer that music videos are
popular amongst people because
33.3% of people said they
thoroughly enjoy watching music
videos by rating their interest in
music videos as a 5, along with
37.5 of people rating their
interest in music videos as a 4.
0% of people rated their interest
in music videos as a 0, meaning
that everyone likes music videos
to a certain extent and therefore
you could argue that people
would watch my music video.
My fourth question “What is
your favourite genre?” was to
simply gain an insight into what
type of music people like. 32% of
people answered with Indie
which could mean that they like
instruments in songs. A
convincing 24% of people
answered rock which also
includes many instruments and
this starts to create a link
towards the Folk genre because
the genre also includes
instruments and a similar sound
to indie. 12% of people
answered other, which may
suggest that Folk is another
option and therefore people
have a slight interest into the
genre.

Now I tried applying the focus to

the Folk genre. The fifth question
I asked was “How often do you
exhibit Folk music videos?”
because it would be a direct
indication of whether people like
Folk music videos. 50% of people
answered ‘never’ which could
possibly mean they have just
never watched a Folk music
video or that they dislike
watching Folk music videos and
therefore decide to never watch
them. 45% of people answered
‘Sometimes’ which is uplifting
because it shows that Folk music
videos are watched and
therefore this would prompt me
to make a Folk music video.
I think that the style of music
videos is very important because
it can make the audience relate
to the music video. 45.8% of
people preferred mixture type of
music videos which means
people like a combination of
both narrative and performance,
which is typically experienced in
Folk music videos.

The music video linking to the

lyrics is very important according
to my questionnaire as 58.3% of
people said that they like it, and
the other 41.7% said ‘not always’
which means that sometimes it’s
not always necessary but the
majority says that they like the
music video relating to the lyrics
of the song and therefore I will
try and present the music video
to link to the lyrics of the song.

The majority of people answered

this questions with ‘sometimes’
and therefore I can deduce that
it is not necessary to have an
established story line included in
my music video, but at the same
time, 29.2% of people said that
they prefer to have an
established story line which
prompts to attempt to include a
story line as it may help people
connect to my music video.
There is an overwhelming
majority that say that they prefer
more than one location, 91.7%.
This further reinforces the idea
that I have to use more than one
location, as it will add variation
and engross people more.

In this question, the range of

answers were dispersed, and
therefore I should have a range
of locations which people like to
see, not just a random location
but a location where the
audience can deduce meaning
and where I can potentially
create meaning. 30.8% of people
said that they like urban areas so
this encourages me to use town
centre as a location, however
26.9% of people like rural, more
suburban areas which I believe it
would be more applicable to my
music video.

There was a lot of comments

saying that people like to see the
instruments in the music video,
which is perfect for my music
video because using instruments
is part of the Folk genre codes
and conventions.
