Lesson Development/Procedures
Teacher begins lesson by showing one of the Georgia O’Keefe pantings and asking which part of the plant they can see in the
picture. Do this with a few more paintings.
Show students their challenge: to create a sculpture of a plant showing the roots, leaves, stem, and flower. Review sculpture
and 3D.
Explain texture to students. Texture is how a piece of art might feel. Show the O’Keefe paintings again and point out the
texture in the pictures. Brainstorm with students how they could create texture using playdoh. They can use their fingers, a
toothpick, twisting the dough, etc.
Students break out into groups to create their sculpture. Teacher monitors to make sure students are on task and on the right
track.
When finished, students explain to teacher the parts of the plants in their sculpture. If time permits, students can use sticky
notes to label the parts. Students can then go around and look at all of the finished sculptures and notice all of the parts of a plant in
their sculptures.
Assessment:
Teacher observation of sculptures and students accurate labeling of the parts of a plant.
Differentiation:
Students work in groups, so they can help each other with the parts of the plant. A visual of the parts of a plant is visable for
students to refer back to.
