(i) For Vertical load (Z):

Fig 4.6 Free body diagram of pipe support for EP plate weld design (Model 1)

Refer to figure 4.6,

W2= Weight of 50 NB pipe with contents + seismic load
W3= Weight of 80 NB pipe with contents + seismic load
Taking moment about point ‘B’

M = W2 X 1 + W 3 X 2 ----11

1.76 M
Bending stress (b) = h(D+0.707h)2 ----12

Where,
M = Bending moment
h = Fillet weld size (mm) (3 mm fillet is considered)
D = Outer diameter of pylon pipe

In the present case, W2 = 256 N, W3 = 665 N, X1 = 250 mm, X2 = 250 mm,

h = 3 mm, D = 88.9 mm

Substituting the above values in equations 11 to 12, we get,

Bending Moment (M) = 23E4 N-mm

Bending stress in weld (b) = 16.3 MPa

Allowable bending stress = 157.5 MPa (as per IS: 226)

Induced bending stress in less than the allowable stress and hence the design is safe.

In the present case, W2 = 48 N, W3 = 125 N, X1 = 5373 mm, X2 = 2923 mm,
h = 3 mm, D = 88.9 mm

Substituting the above values in equations 11 to 12, we get,

Bending stress in weld (b) = 57.494 MPa

Allowable bending stress = 157.5 MPa (as per IS: 226)

Substituting the above values in equations 6 and 13, we get,

Shear stress in weld, (𝜏 s) = 1.59MPa

Allowable shear stress = 102.5 MPa (as per IS: 226)

Taking moment about point ‘B’

Bending Moment, M = W * X = 260 * 150 = 39000 N-mm

In the present case, b = 100 mm, d = 50 mm, X = 150 mm

Shear stress () = Total vertical load / (Weld perimeter * 0.707 * Fillet Weld size)

W= Seismic load of 50 NB pipe with contents in X and Y direction

Taking moment about point ‘B’

Bending Moment, M = W * L = 81 * 1550 = 125550 N-mm

In the present case, b = 100 mm, d = 50 mm, L = 1550 mm

h = Fillet weld size (mm) (3 mm fillet is considered)
