PHYSICS WORKSHEET STD- IX UPTHRUST IN FLUIDS

Q1) A boat floats in water with one- third of its volume above the surface. What
fraction of its volume will be above the surface, when floating in a liquid of density
1.5g/cm3?

Q2) A cargo ship is loaded in sea water to maximum capacity. What will happen if this
ship is moved to river water? Give a reason for your answer.

Q3) Why is the volume of floating ice above brine higher than that in water?

Q4) Will the weight of an ‘iron sinker plus cork’ combination in water be more or less
than that of the iron sinker alone in water? Explain.

Q5) Two blocks of equal masses of lead and copper are immersed in water. They
experience buoyant forces F1 and F2 respectively. What will the ratio of F1 and F2?
(<,=or<1)

Q6) A solid of density 2.7g/cm3 and volume 0.0015m3 is completely immersed in

alcohol of density 800kgm-3. Calculate in SI unit-
i. Weight of the solid.
ii. Upthrust on solid.
iii. Apparent weight of the solid in alcohol. [40.5N; 12N; 28.5N]

Q7) State the factors on which loss of weight of a body in a liquid depend.

Q8) Is it correct to say that one kilogram each of iron and aluminium experience same
buoyant force when released in water?

Q9) A brick suspended from a spring balance is lowered gradually into water. The
reading of the spring balance decreases gradually till it acquires certain constant value.
Explain the reason.

Q10) Give reasons for-
i. Aquatic animals have soft skeletons.
ii. Aquatic plants have soft stems.
iii. Birds flap their wings in order to fly.

Q11) A wooden block of mass 400g floats vertically in a liquid of density 0.8gcm-3. If
the volume of the block is 625cm3, find the volume of the block above the surface of
the liquid. [Hint m=vimmersed X dliquid]

Q12) What is the upthrust on 90cm3 of iron when-

i. Totally immersed in water
ii. Half immersed in oil of density 0.6g/cm3 [90gf;27gf]

Q13) A piece of metal of density 5.9gcm-3 weighs 47.2gf in air. What is its apparent
weight if suspended totally immersed in water? [39.2gf]

Q14) 72cm3 of wood of density 0.84gcm-3 floats in brine of density 1.2gcm-3. What
volume of brine is displaced? [50.4cm3]
