I. About the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC)


IFAC is the global organization for the accountancy profession. It works with its 164 members
and associates in 125 countries to protect the public interest by encouraging high quality
practices by the world’s accountants. IFAC member bodies represent 2.5 million accountants
employed in public practice, industry and commerce, government, and academe. Its structure and
governance provide for the representation of its diverse constituencies and interaction with
external groups that rely on or influence the work of accountants.
The primary objectives of IFAC are:
• Serving the Public Interest—IFAC provides leadership to the worldwide accountancy
profession in serving the public interest by: developing, promoting and maintaining
global professional standards and a Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants of a
consistently high quality; actively encouraging convergence of professional
standards, particularly, auditing, assurance, ethics, education, and public and private
sector financial reporting standards; seeking continuous improvements in the quality
of auditing and financial management; promoting the values of the accountancy
profession to ensure that it continually attracts high caliber entrants; promoting
compliance with membership obligations; and assisting developing and emerging
economies, in cooperation with regional accounting bodies and others, to establish
and maintain a profession committed to quality performance and to serve the public
interest.
• Contributing to the Efficiency of the Global Economy—IFAC contributes to the
efficient functioning of the international economy by: improving confidence in the
quality and reliability of financial reporting; encouraging the provision of high quality
performance (financial and nonfinancial) within organizations; promoting the
provision of high quality services by all members of the worldwide accountancy
profession; and promoting the importance of adherence to the Code of Ethics for
Professional Accountants by all members of the accountancy profession, including
members in industry, commerce, the public sector, the not-for-profit sector, academia
and public practice.
• Providing Leadership and Spokesmanship—IFAC is the primary spokesperson for the
international profession and speaks out on a wide range of public policy issues,
especially those where the profession’s expertise is most relevant, as well as on
regulatory issues relating to auditing and financial reporting. This is accomplished, in
part, through outreach to numerous organizations that rely on or have an interest in
the activities of the international accountancy profession.

II. POSITION SUMMARY


The Technical Manager – IESBA works in support of the International Ethics Standards Board
for Accounting (IESBA), which comprises volunteer members from around the world. The
Technical Manager reports to the Deputy Director, IESBA. The Technical Manager is a key
member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) staff and is expected to
understand, support, and promote the objectives of IFAC and the IESBA. In consultation with
the Deputy Director, the Technical Manager supports the successful implementation of the
IESBA Strategy and Work Program. The Technical Manager is expected to be sufficiently
adaptable and experienced as to allow reassignment to other tasks, should the needs of the
organization require it.

III. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Standard Setting Process

Meetings

Prepare meeting agendas and papers for IESBA meetings for relevant projects and
oversee their posting on the website.
Support the arrangement of and agenda planning for meetings of the IESBA and other
relevant committees/groups .
Attend relevant IESBA and task force meetings, participate in discussions and record
decisions or minutes.

Standard Development

Plan, coordinate, and support IESBA project task forces, including preparation of high
quality agenda papers for relevant projects, and discuss project progress against
objectives and timetable with the Deputy Director.
Draft standards and guidance (exposure drafts and final versions) in consultation with
relevant task forces and the IESBA and oversee publication and release.
Review IESBA agenda material submissions for quality in terms of lexicon,
completeness, style and format.
Assist the IESBA Chair and Deputy Director in responding to new developments and
emerging issues, and to inquiries regarding technical, process and administrative issues.
Standard Implementation

Assist the Deputy Director in responding to queries regarding implementation of


standards and guidance.

Special Projects

Conduct project research, including liaison with national and international standard-
setters/IFAC member bodies around the world.
Prioritize and establish requirements for project proposals and other material for
consideration by IESBA.
In consultation with Deputy Director, monitor and revise IESBA project timetable.

External Relations

In consulation with the Deputy Director build/maintain relationships with existing


stakeholder groups (e.g. Consultative Advisory Group, National Standard Setters,
IOSCO, etc.), and identify potential new stakeholder groups.
Identify and support opportunities to market IESBA pronouncements and activities to
stakeholder groups and the general public).
Draft articles and presentations as appropriate.
Prepare or support the development of the IESBA annual reporting and periodic reports
to IFAC boards and committees on the activities of the IESBA.

Organizational Management

Monitor and manage task force travel costs.


Assist the Deputy Director in preparing and tracking the budget.
Participate in the IFAC Performance management program, by coaching and mentoring
the IESBA Administrative Assistant and assisting the Deputy Director in establishing
benchmark performance goals.

IV. QUALFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

A professionally recognized accounting degree or other relevant qualification;


Certification as a Chartered Accountant or Certified Public Accountant;
An excellent knowledge of issues relating to ethics – experience in the standards setting
process is a plus, as is an understanding of the special considerations relating to the unque
challenges and , small- and medium-sized entities (SMEs) or public sector entities;
Excellent communication skills both oral and written. Fluency in written and spoken
English is critical – knowledge of another language is very desirable;
Excellent organizational skills; and
Strong computer literacy.
V. PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
The ideal candidate will possess the following attributes:
Ability to liaise with senior members of the accounting profession;
Ability to work with many cultures;
Strong organizational skills; and
Strong interpersonal skills, with flexibility especially important.

The successful applicant will be a self-starter, able to work without supervision and able to
respond quickly to issues. He/she will be willing to travel internationally – about 25-35 days per
year.

It is anticipated that the successful applicant will currently be, or have had experience, at the
manager or senior manager level in:
professional practice;
a professional accounting body; or
the office of a public sector auditor.

Location

The candidate will be based in either the New York or Toronto IFAC office. When applying,
