Universal Design for Learning (UDL): For this lesson plan, there will be differentiation for all students, so that
each student has the same opportunity for learning. I have created a board builder through Discovery
Education for all students to view. This board can not only be viewed as a class whole to present the lesson on
adding and subtracting lessons, but it can also be viewed on the students personal computer or device at
home. This gives students the access to go back to what was learned in class to refresh their memory or
review a topic they did not understand in class. There is also a view implemented into my board that allows
for students who need a visual representation rather than a lecture by the teacher. This video is especially
helpful for ESL students who have trouble staying focused through learning on a board and can access this at
anytime. Students are also able to create their own account on Discovery Education and edit my board.

Lesson idea implementation: I will start the lesson through asking each student to grab his or her own laptop
from the back of the classroom. The students will log onto Discovery Education and access my addition and
subtraction of fractions education board. The class will first view the video as a whole on the SmartBoard to
introduce the lesson. After viewing the video, the students are free to navigate my education board. There
are three templates the students must complete after viewing the video and understanding the content;
What I Know, What I Do not Know, and What I Learned.

There are also two worksheets provided for the students to practice. These worksheets are consisted of
addition and subtraction of fractions. The students understanding of adding and subtracting fractions will be
assessed by the two worksheets implemented into the board building on Discovery Education. This will give
the teacher a great sense of where the students need to improve and what else needs to be

addressed/reviewed. I will also provide feedback to the students through these worksheets so they can be
aware of what they need to work on.

Reflective Practice: To extend the lesson, I would love for the students to bring in their own “pie dessert” on
pie day. This will be a fun activity to get the students thinking about parts of a pie and adding and subtracting.
If willing, each student will bring in their own pie and cut their pie into as many pieces as they would like.
They will then create different addition and subtraction problems out of their pie. This will be set up as a
group activity. Each table will have a different pie and a sheet of paper to write down the fraction sentences
they can come up with.
