There are 6 stages of creative problem solving (CPS) method and divided into 3 essentials,

including:

3.1 Explore the challenge

3.1.1 Stage 1: Identify the goal, wish or challenge

Most of you have probably used paint rollers before, with varying degrees of success. Maybe
you just plunged right in and started rolling, developing your own technique as you went. Or
maybe you read the instructions telling you to apply the paint in some pattern, usually a “W.
So, our goals for inventing this auto-roller paint is to minimize the problem that are caused
by the painter, to paint the wall perfectly and to reduce human energy while painting.

Our wish by inventing this product is to achieve all of our goals that we have stated above.
Moreover, we also wish that our design can attract people to buy it and we can gain profit
from the design. The challenge we had to face is difficulty in choosing suitable material to
make the product. Furthermore, we also had problem in designing the paint roller because the
design is a bit complicated. Innovation of usual roller paint can make the people more
comfortable in their routine life. Therefore, the challenges make our work function properly.
From the product obtain, we hope it can help people to have a comfortable life.

3.1.2 Stage 2: Gather data

Once resolve the problems, we continue to gather information on the problem and related
data is crucial to understand the problem. Using 5W1H question, it is appropriate to gather
data such as:

i. Who is or should be involved?

All community especially paint workers

ii. What is or is not happening?

Material: plastic, small tube, nylon, polyster, wool

iii. When does this or should this happen?

When they want to paint the walls

iv. Where does or doesn’t this occur?

Home or buildings
v. Why does it or doesn’t it happen?

To produce user friendly paint roller

vi. How does it or doesn't it occur?

Sketching and using AutoCad

The data from this problem we gather by three ways where:

a) Surfing the internet

b) Do a survey

c) Based on our own experience

3.1.3 Stage 3: Clarify the problem

Based on the gathered data and objective of the problem, we can find out the challenges that
we might face and the various opportunity that exist inside of it. In this stage, it will help us
to reveal the real problem where it is:

a) Paint usually drops (in small drops) on clothes and floor while painting
b) The standard paint roller is time consuming and use a lot of human enrgy.
c) The standard paint roller is heavy

After having simple group discussion, we come out with decision that the problem how to
have comfortable life can be handled by create something that can ease their burden and
affordable for them to effort for it.

3.2 Prepare for Action

3.3.1 Stage 5: Select & Strengthen Solution

After consider all the advantages and disadvantages of ideas generated, we finally decided
that replacing the current design of paint roller will be the best and practical solution to solve
the problem.

We intend to replace current design of the paint roller into something that can solve
the situation. We aim to solve the problem by changing the material of the paint holder using
plastic so it is more lighter than the previous one. The length of paint holder also can be
adjusted into any length that we want and we also intend to add a cover to the roller paint so
that the paint will not drop to our clothes and floor.

3.3.2 Stage 6: Plan for action

To solve the problem, we had did some research on current design of the roller paint, which
can be found on current market. Apparently, the paint roller that are available in current
market do not have the feature that we need.

We had distributed and assigned specific works for each of the members in our team. Upon
completion of each task, the result will report to our team leader, Noraida bt Che Shukur
Nekhmat.
We also use Osborn Checklist for our creative problem solving.

1. Modify The handle can be adjustable to any

length

2. Magnify Adding plastic shield to prevent the

drop of paints

3. Substitute The material used for the handle is

change to plastic

4. Combine The roller frame being combine with

5.0 PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

5.1 DETAILING SPECIFICATION

New product development is the complete process of bringing a new product to

market. It is also one of the processes that can transform the market opportunity into
something available for sale. To get the excellent sale, we need to fully understand what the
customer needs and wants because of the competitive environment and the nature of market
represent as the top required factors to lead for a success of the invention product.
Furthermore, punctuality, cost, time, and quality are also the main variables that drive the
customer needs.

To increase the marketing sales of the companies, they must have the strategies that
can satisfy the customer and also need to practice continuously in developing of the product
regularly. Moreover, there must be many challenges that the companies must face throughout
the process. The best way to survive, the communication skills are very important and it is the
main concern for the management of new product development process.

So, to get the best innovations, one of the best ways is to get the best team workers. A
good collaboration and team work can lead to a good product development so that, the
product completely done and can achieve the market sale. Lastly, all we need is the
satisfaction of the customers which decided either the product is will succeed or just a failure.

5.1.2 THE ENHANCEMENT OF THE NEW PRODUCT

As being described above, we have added the value into our new products. As for the
enhancement, as a group we have fully agreed to choose a paint roller as our products to
renew and add the value into it. The enhancement that we do for our products is we add the
tube along the handle so that it can just sucks the paint without need us to roll the paint by
ourselves. As the decade past, and the technologies becomes more advance, we have decided
to make new of the paint roller. We decided to make the handle adjustable so that it becomes
more modern and friendlier user.

5.2 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Concept development is a process driven by a set of customer needs and target
product specifications, which are then converted into a set of conceptual designs and potential
technological solutions. These solutions represent an approximate description of form,
working principles, and product features. In this development, the actual offering is designed.
We undertake research to find out the potential costs, revenues and profits arising from the
product. The business conducts an analysis to identify the strengths, weakness opportunities
and threats existing in the market.

While in this process, we improve our invention to fulfill the market needs and also
the customers such we change the paint roller to auto-paint roller. Product development
entails the actual design and manufacture of the product. Development commences with the
manufacture of a prototype that facilitates market testing. Based upon the results of the tests,
we decide on whether to undertake large-scale production or not. Good concept development
is crucial. During this stage, the needs of the target market are identified, competitive
products are reviewed, product specifications are defined, a product concept is selected, an
economic analysis is done, and the development project is outlined. This stage provides the
foundation for the development effort, and if poorly done can undermine the entire effort.
Concept development activities are normally organized according to figure below.
