the concept
E
xhibition extends beyond the
traditional notions of movement to
celebrate the fusion of dance and
other art forms. The show’s three
themes, The Written, The Visual and The
Object show how dance can be inspired by
different creative mediums, such as literature,
visual art, or the physical form. Exhibition seeks
to explore the versatility of movement and use it
to represent all aspects of these artistic mediums,
including design, aesthetics, meaning, and nar-
rative. The ebb and flow of words, the curvature
and edges of an object, the colours and depth of
a picture: these are all notions that the dancers
have considered throughout the development of
the show. The process of taking inspiration from
outside sources has resulted in the creation of new
and original works of art. It is the combination of
adding our own touch to others’ existing work, that
enables the creation of a performance synergy.

Back in November we presented our idea to
the choreographers and challenged them to
think outside the box and push their creative
boundaries. We encouraged them to be bold
and imaginative in constructing their concepts.
We could not have fathomed the diversity of
visions that they would come up with. From
translating sign language into movement,
to reenacting Picasso’s Guernica through
tap, Exhibition is a show diverse in culture,
history, and dance styles.

Guernica
by Giselle Farrer (tap)
Inspiration: Guernica, Pablo Ruiz Picasso, 1937
Picasso’s Guernica depicting the Spanish Civil War emphasises how the petty discrepancies
of tyrannous world leaders should never cost the lives of innocent people. This dance unites
the painting with dance, highlighting the importance of mutual understanding in everyday
life.

Partitura

Inspiration: Musical notation
This piece is music, literally and figuratively. Mu-
sical notation involves many interplaying elements
that together create an intricate composition.
Each of these elements can be taken from the
sheet and enlarged into a story experienced in
everyday life. Through these narratives one can
see how intertwined music is with the human
experience.

My friend Tom Clifford took his own life on 10th December 2017. He was one of many
students at UCL waiting to receive psychological support. I choreographed this dance in
memory of Tom and to highlight a growing mental health crisis in UK universities who refuse
to prioritise their psychological services.

Kaleidoscope

Inspiration: Kaleidoscope toy
Turning a kaleidoscope reveals a marve-
lous display of colour, geometry and light.
It is the power of reflection that enables the
creation of patterns that flow seamlessly in
and out of each other. This ballet piece is
an exploration of kaleidoscopic imagery
through movement; the dancers transform
themselves to create a real life kaleido-
scope.
Still Movement

Inspiration: Sculptures, Nora Fok
Nora Fok’s wearable sculpture is inspired by
movements found in daily life; this dance
aims to reflect the geometric and cyclical
pattern of the artwork by using the human
body to move in a way that mimics the
shapes and lines of these sculptures.

Hysteria
by Mel John (contemporary)
Inspiration: The Crucible, Arthur Miller, 1953
The Crucible was written as an allegory of the second red scare in the mid 1900s, when
people were ostracised for being believed communists. This dance depicts the hysteria and
chaos that can result from mob mentality, and the absurdity and darkness this produces.

Campbell’s Soup Cans
by Windie Hoefs (stomp)
Inspiration: Campbell’s Soup Cans, Andy
Warhol, 1962
Through painting soup cans on canvas in his
artwork, Andy Warhol reflects his philosophy
that “everything is beautiful but not everyone
sees it”. This stomp piece aims to depict this
idea, by incorporating daily objects to create
rhythm and dance.

Word of Body
by Ada Liebenau (contemporary)
Inspiration: British Sign Language
This dance displays the extent to which move-
ment can manifest language and the signing
utilises only the song lyrics. The dancers evoke
a sense of unease as their hands become alien.
Gradually they learn to utilise signing to explore
the visual representation of words and incor-
porate their entire body into the language.

Blue Pill or Red?
by Xue Chen (hip hop)
Inspiration: Cell phone shackles
The title of this dance comes from the fa-
mous Matrix trilogy where Neo had to choose
between the blue pill representing blissful ig-
norance of illusion, and the red pill represent-
ing freedom and the truth. This piece portrays
a similar choice in relation to our cell phone:
although it brings people far from you closer,
it also takes you away from the ones right next
to you.

Waves

Inspiration: Rain, Don Patterson, 2009
This piece uses the motif of water to show the transience of life. It explores the ebb
and flow of movement to reflect the movement qualities of water, as well as it’s
metaphorical ability to be a blinding but also cleansing force. The piece aims to
show people coming together and uniting in their struggles.

Pink or Blue

Inspiration: Pink or Blue, Holly McNish, 2017
Biologically, we have a 50/50 chance of being born a girl or a boy. Yet the sec-
ond we are born, society traps us in hermetic gender stereotypes, dictating how
we should behave. This dance emphasises how meaningless these stereotypes are
and the need to disregard them.

This piece explores the complexity of self-love and acceptance through the gaze of
a black woman. It looks at ‘colourism’ and the idea that ‘lighter is better’ and the effects
this view has on black women. It looks into a journey of self-hatred to self-acceptance
and self-love.
