Aleks ISSN Reflection

In my Algebra 2 class, my teacher assigned the class an assignment, which we work on

every Tuesday or at home. The assignment is called Aleks. It is an online website which

everyone has their own personal login name and password. The website includes mathematical

topics which we are able to practice to gain greater knowledge of math. Once we pass a topic, we

it adds on to the many topics we have mastered before. There is also a Knowledge Check after

we have completed at least 20 topics or at a certain time. When I first got assigned this

assignment, I felt relieved because I have worked on this website before in 9th and 10th grade

(but with a different account every year). Some goals I had before starting this assignment was to

make sure I reviewed my notes and to at least get 200 mastered topics so I would not have to

relearn them.

The steps I took throughout completing the Knowledge Check was going back to my

notes and reviewing what I learned. After, I would also use the Algebra 2 book for a second

source. Next, I used a whiteboard or line paper to use as scratch paper and write down some

equations/ problems. For learning a regular topic, I use line paper or a whiteboard to write notes

and problems to solve. I also read the notes the topic gives before the actual problem solving.

This allows me to understand the problem better.

There are many topics in Aleks to learn. I learn the topics by reading the notes, evaluating

how to solve the problem, and then solve it myself; I learn a lot from doing this. I learned a bit

about myself when doing Aleks. For instance, I learned that I am really good at problem solving

and coming to a conclusion. I am also good at figuring out how to solve a problem in my head if

I really understand it. I honestly did not know this about myself before. I excel at solving

problems mentally and taking notes when I feel the need to. The area that I need to improve in is

being lazy. Sometimes I do not feel like doing mathematical problems and slack off. Next time, I

will put in effort to complete something even if I do not get it. What makes me proud of myself

is that I am able to comprehend what is happening in a problem. What makes me disappointed is

when I cannot solve a problem when I have already learned it before.

I recognized and weighed multiple perspectives by solving equations and problems many

ways other than just settling to one. This experience supported our vision because it shows us

that there are more solutions than just one to a problem. I communicated ideas in different ways

by asking my teacher and peers how to solve a problem and equation and then seeing figuring it

out together because this helps our understanding.
