DYE REMOVAL OF METHYLENE BLUE BY ORANGE PEEL

ANTICIPATED RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Table 1: tabulated data

Initial concentration Final concentration Volume of Absorbent Dye removal

of dye of dye dye solution dosage percentage

The amount of adsorption at equilibrium time, 𝑞𝑒 (mg/g) can be calculated using the
equation:

(𝐶0 −𝐶𝑒 )𝑉
𝑞𝑒 = ……(1)
𝑊

Where,

𝐶0 = Concentrations of dye at initial (mg/L)

𝐶𝑒 = Concentrations of dye at equilibrium (mg/L)

𝑉 = Volume of the solution (L)

𝑊 = Mass of dry adsorbent used (g)

The goal of this contribution is to study the factors that affect dye absorbent of
orange peel. By conducting the dye removal experiment, there are actually several
operational parameter factors that affect the dye absorption. The factors include pH,
bio-sorbent dose, initial dye concentration, absorbent particle size, agitation time,
temperature, ionic strength etc (Safa Y. and Bhatti H. N., 2010). However, only one of
these operating parameter factors will be discussed for the absorption of Methylene
Blue (MB) by using orange peel as the dye absorbent, which is the effect of bio-
absorbent dose.

According to the statement of Safa et al (2010), absorbent dose is the most significant
factor because it describes the capability of bio-absorbent for a particular dye
concentration. As of this experiment, the absorption of dye on Methylene Blue is
studied by varying the dose used on orange peel powder. Commonly, absorbent dose is
directly proportional to the percentage of dye removal. This happened because the
amount of sorption site at the adsorbent surface will increase by the increase of
adsorbent dosage (Mohammad Razi M. A. et al, 2016).

dosage. Adapted from Removal of Methylene Blue (MB) Dye from Aqueous Solution by
Bioadsorption onto Untreated Parthenium hystrophorous Weed by Mulugeta M. et al, 2008-
2018, Department of Chemistry, Arba Minch University, Arba Minch, Ethiopia.

A study done by Mulugeta and Lelisa (2008-2018) shows an attempt to enhance

Methylene Blue dye removal was evaluated by examining the effect of absorbent
dosage. The result of the study can be seen in figure 1. By observing the graph in figure
1, the removal percentage of Methylene Blue increases as the amount absorbent
increases and then at some point, it remains constant. This constancy essentially shows
the percentage of dye removal has increased up to its maximum efficiency in which any
increase in absorbent dosage will not affect the percentage of dye removal.

dosage. Adapted from Dyes Removal from Textile Wastewater Using Orange Peels by
AbdurRahman F. et al, 2013, International Journal of Scientific & Technology Research
Volume 2, Issue 9.

However, by observing the result studied by AbdurRahman F. (2013), the graph

in figure 2 indicates that after the percentage of dye reached its maximum efficiency,
in some cases, the percent removal started to decrease which indicates that the
adsorbent reach its optimum adsorption and desorption of the organic substances form
the surface of adsorbent occurs (Khusaibi T. M. A. et al, 2015). When too much
adsorbent was added into the dye solution, the transportation of dye ions to the active
adsorption sites will be limited as well, hence reduced the adsorption efficiency
(AbdurRahman F., 2013).
