Prices steady, but too early to tell on nominations

US acetic acid prices held steady during the first week of the
new year, though January has just begun and sources said
producer nominations could still yield higher prices.
Buyers said prices tended toward the low end of the published
range. A supplier said it was too early to judge the success of
January nominations.

Most US producers nominated increases to take effect on the
New Year of 2.0-5.0 cents/lb. BP had the highest proposal,
while Eastman had the lowest.
BP and Eastman cited increased raw material costs and rising
demand in their announcements. Feedstock US methanol rose
30% in 2013 with much of the gain in the last quarter.
A supplier explained that US prices are the highest in the world
now because of demand outside the US, in Europe and South
America.
A buyer said domestic material remained readily available.
In feedstocks, US methanol spot barge prices remained fairly
stable over the New Year and Christmas holiday period,
edging up to 160-162 cents/gal because of harsh winter
weather in the Northeast. In plant news, LyondellBasell said it
had restarted its Texas methanol unit in Channelview.
