Introduction
- Michael is an American retired competitive swimmer

- Known to be the most successful Olympian of all time


Background Information
- Born on June 30, 1985 in Baltimore Maryland

- Youngest of three children

- Began swimming around the age of 7

- His first stoke to master was the backstroke

- Soon started to love swimming and dreamed of becoming a champion

- At 15 he became the youngest American male swimmer to


compete at an Olympic Games in 68 years
Hardships Faced
- Lost the 200m individual medley to Ryan Lochte

- Lost a second time in a row to Lochte in the 200m


individual medley

- In the London Olympics he failed to secure a medal


for the 400m individual relay which was his first ever
since 2000

- The disappointment continued as Phelps finished at


the second spot in the 200m butterfly behind Chad Clos
Victories

- Record holder of a total of 28 medals

- 23 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze

- Set 39 world record which is the most of all time

Explanation
- All pools used for Olympic swimming events must
measure 50m in length and 8 swimming lanes
each 2.5 m wide

- Competitors use elevated starting blocks from which they perform dive starts
for the freestyle and breaststroke and butterfly events

- Backstroke competitors start in the pool and push off when the starting
buzzer sounds

- You are scored based on your technique and speed

- Equipment needed is swim cap, swim gear, and goggles

In swimming the force produced by the swimmer is equal to the mass of the
swimmer multiplied by the acceleration of them in the water.

Newton’s Third Law
In swimming the arm stroke when the hand travels downward in the water and
then backwards to move the swimmer forward which creates an equal and
opposite reaction.
