Conversation with Ian Maxwell, Belfast Crown Court. March 16 1995. Ian checked the court records for John Joe Magee's conviction. He confirmed that the records showed that Magee was convicted of the possession of ammunition and sentenced to eight years on March 22 1971. At that time he was aged 42 (DOB February 1930). Conversation with retired RUC Inspector MEER Merch 15.1995. was very cautious in his conversation with me. He said that he had been in charge of the investigations into the Lowry and Fulton shootings, but had not had anything to do with the Graham investigation. He said that Ewins was never charged with anything and that there was never a warrant out for his arrest. He said that the police never had anything other than suspicions about Ewins. If they had had anything more then they would have arrested him. He said that he had never interviewed Ewins in connection with the incidents. He did not know that Ewins had been named by Collins in the latter's 1985 RUC interrogation. I put it to him that there might have been some sort of ‘deal' to allow Ewins to escape the country. said that it was possible, although unlikely. confirmed that Lord Lowry's visit had been put back. At first he thought that it had only been put back by a week, but when I suggested that it was more than a week he said that I was probably right: he could not remember precisely because of the passage of time. When I outlined the nature of the allegations that we would be making against Ewins he said that he thought that the RUC would have to reopen their file on the case in the wake of our film. However, he said that although we probably had enough evidence to defend ourselves in a libel action he did not think there was sufficient new evidence to bring criminal charges against Ewins. Note on Len 'Hardbap' Hardy. 4 rains The Special Criminal Court in Dublin sentenced Leonard Hardy to five years imprisonment for unlawful possession of explosives at Rosslare County Wexford. Hardy was found in possession of sodium chlorate and ten mercury tilt-switches on July 12 1989. Hardy was aged 29 when he was sentenced on February 22 1990. His co-accused, Donna Maguire of Newry, was acquitted. Both had been carrying false passports. Hardy's address at the time was given as Ballyshannon Avenue, Coolock, Dublin.
