SUMMARY PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION: THE BASICS

When you are running a new business, the speed to deliver your goods counts. For
that reason, choosing a great way of transportation will make your business better
or worst. Consequently, as manager of your own business, you need to take into
consideration many factors at the moment of delivering your goods and services.
So, when choosing means of transportation factors such as: budget, time, provide
reliable transportation and securing goods and services during shipping must be
taken into account in order to satisfy customers needs. Among the different ways of
transportation goods and services, road, rail, air and sea seem to be the modes by
which companies prefer to deliver their products. These ways of transportation to
great extend might be flexible and non-flexible for both the customers and
companies. For example if companies deliver large and over weight products across
long distances by train, it would be cheaper if they carry 300 tons or more per train.
However, if companies want to make a faster delivery air transportation appears to
be a great option, but the cost is very high.

It is also important that at the moment of choosing a mode of transport, the

following should be considered:

 When you're choosing how best to transport your products, budget should be
the most important factor in your decision-making.

 The speed of the transport is also important - if you have perishable items,
sending them on a three-month sea voyage through Africa is a bad idea.
Likewise, make sure the mode of transport you choose is reliable so your
customers are not disappointed.

 If your products are expensive or you are shipping your product by sea, you
may want to consider some for insurance. This will come in the form of goods-
in-transit or marine insurance, and is paid for either by the buyer or the seller,
depending on what the terms of trade are. If you think insurance is necessary,
make sure you have agreed on the terms with your supplier or customer to
avoid confusion.

 While damage during transit is fairly common, it is usually the responsibility

of the supplier to make sure cargos are adequately packaged and labelled to
reduce the risk.
