Primary Exam Current Editions of Texts and Models

It is emphasised that the examination is aimed at evaluating candidates’ knowledge of subjects, not textbooks.
Although careful consideration of the texts available has led to the recommendation some texts as core
references for the subject, it is acknowledged that no single textbook can contain the entire knowledge base
required for the primary examination. Where the subcommittee feels that additional resources would be of
benefit, these have been listed in the relevant subject section below.
As an example, the core reference for Pharmacology is Katzung Basic and Clinical Pharmacology by Katzung et
al. However, candidates are encouraged to seek other sources for areas of the curriculum not covered by this
text.
Whilst the College recommends the editions of the texts and models listed below as being those which best
approximate the material in the syllabus in each subject, it advises candidates to acquaint themselves with
those aspects of each subject that relate to the common conditions encountered in emergency medicine. The
model list is a sample of the models that may be used in the exam. It is not an exhaustive list and any model
used in the exam will be covered by the syllabus.
Please note: The most recent edition of these texts should be used. If the most recent edition has been
available for less than 12 months, the previous edition may also be used.
