Course Outline : Introduction to Linguistic

1a Unit description and learning outcomes


This course covers the nature of linguistic relationships, causes of language changes, and
language components having undergone changes e.g. phonological, morphological, syntactic,
and semantic. Methods and techniques in studying languages over periods of time will also be
explored in this course particularly comparative method and internal reconstruction. This course
will provide students with hands-on experience in working with linguistic data. The course will
be conducted as a seminar; therefore, active participation in class discussions is expected and
encouraged. In this course, students learn not only the fundamental contents of historical
linguistics, but also how to “do” historical linguistics by working through exercises involving a
variety of languages.

2a Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Understand the nature of linguistic relationships and causes of language changes;


2. Identify changes in language components at the level of phonological, morphological,
syntactic, and semantic changes; and
3. Apply methods and techniques in studying languages over periods of time.

3a Learning activities:
Classroom discussion and written report based on weekly reading lists, presentations, group
projects on investigating changes in particular languages.
