1. Air flows past the open end of a vertical tube filled with acetone (which evaporates into
the air stream). The liquid level in the tube is z inches below the top of the tube. Roughly
plot the concentration profile of acetone in the gas film.
If the acetone is replaced with a very non volatile liquid ( i.e. it is very dilute in the gas
phase), state any assumptions you could make to simplify your result and plot the
new concentration profile.

2. Hydrogen gas is stored at 85 C and 7 atm in a 4 m outer diameter spherical container

made of nickel. The shell of the container is 2" thick. The concentration of hydrogen in
the nickel at the inner surface is determined to be 0.087 mol/lit. The concentration of
hydrogen at the outer surface is negligible. Derive an expression for the concentration
profile through the container and determine the mass flow rate of hydrogen by
diffusion through the nickel container. Diffusivity of hydrogen in nickel = 1.2 * 10-12
m2/s.
