1. Briefly describe the students in this class, including those with special needs.
The students in this class are a 3rd grade level and are at varying levels of social and academic needs.

2. What are the goals for the lesson? What do you want the students to learn?
The goal for this lesson is to introduce the bullying unit I will be teaching for the next month or so. To start the
discussion about bullying, we are going to be discussing words and how words can make us feel good or make us
feel bad. The goal is that students will walk away learning that when we bring others down with our words, we
can't take those words back. Words leave a permanent mark on our heart.

3. How do these goals support the District’s curriculum?


All district school counselors align their curriculum to the ASCA National Standards for Students. This lesson will
address standards:
M 1. Belief in development of whole self, including a healthy balance of mental, social/emotional and physical
well-being
M 3. Sense of belonging in the school environment
B-SMS 2. Demonstrate self-discipline and self-control
B-SS 2. Create positive and supportive relationships with other students
B-SS 4. Demonstrate empathy
B-SS 5. Demonstrate ethical decision-making and social responsibility
B-SS 9. Demonstrate social maturity and behaviors appropriate to the situation and environment

This lesson also addresses the requirement to teach bullying in district curriculum in order to raise awareness about
the issue of bullying.

4. How do you plan to engage students in the content? What will you do? What will the students do?
This lesson will be interactive. To start, the kids are going to be told that we will be doing a science experiement. I
will call on volunteers to help me. The experiment is hands on and involves toothpaste as a representation for
words. The lesson is also visual. Students will read a story with the counselor that further discusses how mean
words can affect us. Students will be asked to use ARMS to follow along during instruction. They will also be
asked to share and process what is being taught.

5. What difficulties do students typically experience in this area, and how do you plan to anticipate these
difficulties?
Counseling can be difficult because I am not part of the daily classroom culture. I only come in to teach counseling
once every two weeks. To help address this, I work hard to learn all students name and connect with as many
students as I can in and outside of classroom lessons. This lesson can also be hard because it is hands on and
interactive with just a few students. I will need to keep the lesson engaging enough so all students are activily
listening and learning and not just the few that are called on to participate in the experiment. To keep all kids
engaged, I constantly circulate around the room as much as allows and call on as many students as possible.

7. How do you plan to assess student achievement of the goals? What procedures will you use? (Attach
any tests or performance tasks, with rubrics or scoring guides.)
Informal assessments will take place throughout the whole bullying unit. The informal assessment will include exit
tickets, obervsations, in class activites and share outs, etc.

The toothpaste portion of this lesson/the heart portion of this lesson has more than likely been done before in
various settings so it's very possible that students have done a lesson similar to this in the past. I decided to keep all
the portions of the lessons because the visuals for all the activites are very powerful. Also, it never hurts to re-teach

and remind students about the effect our words can have on others. It also ties into the overall goal of the unit.
