Midterm Exam.

Statistical mechanics.

Instructor: Victor Karpov

Due date: March 12, 2018

Solve 4 problems of 7.

1. Express the mean square of the absolute magnitude of the angular velocity of a
molecule at temperature T through its principle moments of inertia.

2. Find the density of gas as a function of coordinates in a cylinder of radius R

rotating about its axis at angular velocity  if its value at the axis is given.

3. Express the specific heat of an ensemble of N>>1 identical two-level systems

through their energy difference E and temperature.

4. N1 particles are distributed between N2>N1 two level systems of energy E each.
Find the chemical potential of this system vs. temperature.

5. A 1 kg slab of Cu at room temperature absorbs a photon of energy 2 eV. Find the

change in its entropy and its phase space volume.

6. Evaluate in the order of magnitude the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation

for liquid He.

7. Two plates made of different metals are separated by an air gap of 1 cm and left
intact for a very long time. Express the equilibrium strength of electric field
between the plates through the Fermi levels of their respective metals.
