Good afternoon parents,

In Spanish class, our students in 4th grade have recently started a unit of learning about Latin
American countries. This year, we have also been working really hard to promote writing in Spanish as
well. In an effort to extend both of these areas of learning, we are going to be beginning a written
exchange program (Pen Pals) with students of a similar age in a small town in Mexico. Our students just
finished learning about this country so this will be a very special opportunity to see their learning come
to life outside of the classroom.
Students will be writing in Spanish about simple topics that we will cover or have already
learned about in class such as a quick introduction about who they are, family, and the city of Houston.
Students will only be sharing first names (no last names) with their pen pals and I will be checking their
writing before mailing it out. Students should also be receiving letters from their pen pals in the next
couple of weeks.

Buenas tardes padres,

En la clase de español, nuestros estudiantes en 3◦ y 4◦ grado han estado aprendiendo sobre

países de Latinoamérica. Este año también nos hemos enfocado más en promover la escritura en
español. Para extender estas dos áreas de aprendizaje, vamos a comenzar un intercambio escrito con
estudiantes de la misma edad en un pueblo pequeño de México. Nuestros estudiantes acaban de
aprender sobre este país entonces será una oportunidad especial para ver como su aprendizaje se
puede aplicarse fuera del salón.
Estudiantes van a escribir cartas breves sobre temas simples que hemos aprendido o vamos a
aprender como introducciones, familia y la ciudad de Houston. Estudiantes solamente van a compartir
sus primeros nombres (sin apellidos) y yo estaré revisando sus cartas antes de mandarlas. Los
estudiantes también recibirán cartas de los estudiantes de México en unas pocas semanas.
