THE STEPS OF DESIGNING

• Analysis
• Synthesis

iaed 301
analysis
[] What exists?
• Collect and analyze relevant information.
• Document physical/cultural context.
• Describe existing elements.
[] What's desired?
• Identify user needs and preferences.
• Clarify goals.
• Develop matrices, charts, and adjacency diagrams.
[] What's possible?
• What can be altered...what cannot?
• What can be controlled...what cannot?
• What is allowed... what is prohibited?
• Define limits: time, economic, legal, and technical

Space Analysis
[ ] Document Existing or Proposed space
• Measure and draw base plan, sections, and interior elevations
• Photograph existing space
[ ] Analyze space
• Orientation and site conditions of space
• Form, scale, and proportion of space
• Doorway locations, points of access, and the circulation paths they suggest
• Windows and the light, views, and ventilation they afford
• Wall, floor, and ceiling materials
• Significant architectural details

[] SPACE PLANNING

Space Planning implies an order to

create an environment responsive to
and in harmony with its users.

This phase involves developing

concepts in two-dimesional drawings
and skecthes to explain basic
relationships.

Space planning evolves from basic

schematics and bubble diagrams to
final design drawings.

• Start to arrange the spaces to satisfy

the programs and solve the needs of
client.
•Diagram major functional and
spatial relationships.

Bubble Diagrams
Conceptual diagrams are the begining of visualizing functional relationship for the
problem. Bubble diagrams indicate spaces, relationships, circulation , and other
important features . Bubble diagrams also help to reinforce a design concept.

iaed 201
Draft a concept statement.
• Search for ways to combine several good ideas into a single better one

•choose the most appropriate option by going back to see how the selected
concept fits the client’s budget , needs, objectives, and, desires.

•At this stage drawing includes walls, openings, furniture and other details.

[] İmplementation

•Create final design

drawings

approved complete
