PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION:
A. Provide and test (a) steel fuel-oil storage tank(s) and appurtenances as indicated and
specified.
1.03 REFERENCES:
A. NFPA 30: Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code of the National Fire Protection
Association.
E. Equivalent British/European codes and standards may be used; however, the equivalency
shall be demonstrated and submitted by the Contractor and approved by the CM/CS.
1.04 SUBMITTALS:
C. Chock tank until ready for installation and if necessary tie it down, in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions.
D. Lift tank by installation lugs and with proper equipment. Do not use chain or cables
around tank at any time. If tank has to be moved, set on smooth ground free of rocks and
foreign objects, and rechock.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
(NTS: Keep subparagraph "A" if more than one tank or specify quantity herein.)
A. Quantity shown on drawings.
B. Steel fuel-oil storage tank: A horizontal, cylindrical tank of all welded construction with
not less than 3/16-in.(18 mm) thick steel plate shell and heads, bearing UL's "Approved"
underground label. Align suitable tappings axially at top of shell (of each tank) for fill,
vent, alarm, level gage, suction, and necessary return piping.
C. Provide manholes for tanks over 4,000 gallons (15 m3)in capacity.
A. Supply appurtenances for steel fuel-oil storage tank including a fill connection, a suitable
vent alarm, a vent cap, and a remote reading tank gage.
B. Pipe for fill and vent lines: Standard weight black steel pipe using malleable-iron
screwed fittings.
D. Fill cap: Lock-type with quick closing cap and chain and tight fill connection with
provisions for gaging.
G. Vent: Weighted pressure type incorporating a vacuum relief set at 4 ounces (11
gram).for use in connection with an alarm whistle.
J. Calibrate remote reading tank-level gage in gallons to suit capacity of tank and locate as
indicated on drawings. Place no moving part inside tank. Acceptable gage
manufactures: Petrometer Corp., New Hyde Park, NY; Simmonds Precision, Bellows
Falls, VT; Pneumercator Co., New York, NY; or an acceptable equivalent product.
Provide sufficient communicating tubing to make an unbroken connection between tank
and gage dial in building.
L. Provide fuel-oil storage tank with a gage chart calibrated to show tank capacity in gallons
per inch (m3/m) of depth and a gage stick calibrated in feet, inches, and eighths.
A. Shop coat fuel-oil storage tank exterior with a suitable primer and several coats of cold
applied, self priming coal-tar pitch, applied to a thickness not less than 1/16-in.(3 mm),
all in strict accordance with coating manufacturer's recommendations. After tank is in
place, and before backfilling, repair all abraded surfaces and tank anchors and straps as
specified for original coating.
B. Provide tank with a cathodic protection system including coating, anodes, and all
necessary isolation bushings. Make system equivalent to STI's (Steel Tank Institute) P3
system.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 INSTALLATION:
A. Install steel fuel-oil storage tank on a previously placed concrete mat and firmly secure to
anchors therein. Provide anchor brackets, anchor rods, or straps to hold tank to anchors
in mat.
B. Installation: Conform to NFPA 30 and NFPA 31 and all state and local codes and to
manufacturer's instructions.
3.02 TESTING:
B. Field Test (Spark Test): After tank is in place, and before backfilling, check the entire
exterior surface with a spark detector and repair any "holidays" found and retest area.
1. Provide Owner with a certified statement that an electric continuity test has been
made on all coated surfaces of tank.
