SECTION 07600

WALL FLASHING AND SHEET METALWORK

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION:

A. Provide wall flashing, sheet metalwork, and appurtenant work as indicated and specified.

(NTS: Elastomeric materials and methods not included.)

1.04 SUBMITTALS:

A. Submit the following in accordance with Section 01300:

1. Manufacturers' literature describing products.

2. Shop drawings showing fabricated items, complete details of joints, supports, and
fasteners.

3. Setting drawings, or templates and setting instructions, for exact installation.

1.05 JOB CONDITIONS:

A. Protect exposed finishes against construction damage; remove protection prior to final
acceptance.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL:

A. Thickness: Except where otherwise indicated, comply with minimum gauge
requirements as specified in SMACNA's "Architectural and Sheet Metal Manual."

B. Flashing Compound: Polyisobutylene type, non-skinning, nondrying sealant, bulk


conforming to Fed. Spec. SS-C-153, Type 1, or tape as required by installation
conditions, 1-in. (25 mm) minimum width by 1/16-in. (1.5 mm) minimum thickness.

C. Fasteners (Nails, Screws, Rivets, and Bolts and Nuts): Same material as item being
fastened.

D. Nailers: Pressure treated wood as specified in Section 06200.

2.02 FLASHING:

A. Metal:

1. Lead-Coated Copper: 16-oz. hard (cornice) temper copper sheets, lead-coated on


both sides and shall comply with ASTM B101, for Type I or II, Class A Sheets (12
to 15 lb.(5.4 to 6.8 kg) total of lead per 100 sq. ft. (9.3 m). Provide roof temper
except where cornice temper is indicated.

2. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel sheets, Type 304, finish 2D, Condition A (annealed)
conforming to the applicable requirements of ASTM A167, and not less than 26
gage or 0.018 in. (0.46 mm) thick.

3. Copper: 16-oz. hard (cornice) temper copper sheets conforming to Fed. Spec. QQ-
C-576B(1).

4. Aluminum: Aluminum alloy 3003 with temper of H12 or H14 conforming to Fed.
Spec. QQ-A-250/2D and not less than 0.020 in. (0.51 mm) thick.

2.03 REGLETS:

A. Manufacturer:

1. Cushion-Lock Type B-1 reglets by Superior Concrete Accessories, Inc.

2. Type "E" by O'Keefe's Incorporated.

3. RF-2 Reglet, less counterflashing, by MM Systems Corporation.

4. Or acceptable equivalent product.

B. Provisions: Surface-applied, 0.055 in. (1.4 mm) thick extruded aluminum with clear
methacrylate lacquer coating. Aluminum connecting plates and extruded butyl rubber
sealing strips furnished with reglets as required by design.

2.04 ALUMINUM GUTTERS, DOWNSPOUTS AND ACCESSORIES:

A. Materials:

1. Aluminum alloy 3003-H14, flat prefinished sheets. Corrugated downspouts will


not be acceptable.

2. Thickness: .050 in. (1.3 mm)

3. Gutter Size: 6-in. (150 mm) wide x 4-3/4-in. (120 mm) with Ogee profile.

4. Downspout Size: 4-in. (100 mm) x 4-in. (100 mm)

5. Joints: Factory welded joints every 10 ft. (3 m) o.c.

6. Accessories: 2-in. (50 mm) wide aluminum strap channels. Finish similar to
downspouts.

7. Finish: Kynar 500 (Fluoropolymer) finish.

8. Color: To be selected by Engineer from manufacturer’s full range of colors.

2.05 FABRICATION:

A. General:

(NTS: Use any of next 7 paragraphs, if applicable.)


1. Fabricate in accordance with SMACNA's "Architectural and Sheet Metal Manual",
and applicable requirements of NRCA's "A Manual of Roofing Practice", unless
indicated otherwise.

2. Form and fabricate sheet metal in shop, when possible. Identify bulk materials
from which items are field fabricated by manufacturer's trademark printed or
embossed at frequent intervals.

3. Provide profiles with interactions that are sharp, even and true, with plane surfaces
free from buckles and waves; and seams that follow direction of water flow.

4. Reinforce correctly for strength and appearance.

5. Cut, fit, and drill sheet metal as required to accommodate related, adjacent or
adjoining work.

6. Fold, bend or return exposed edges of sheet metal. Raw edges not permitted.

B. Sheet Metal Joints:

1. Provide lock joints; where impractical, lap, rivet, solder, or weld joints, or join as
recommended by manufacturer.

2. Join joints and miters as recommended by manufacturer.

3. Weld in accordance with applicable AWS specification, when positive joining is


required.

4. Turn lock joints, on exposed surfaces, in direction of flow.

C. Expansion and Contraction of Sheet Metal Runs: Provide loose locking slip joint at
maximum eight feet (2.4 m) from external or internal corners, maximum 24 feet (7.3 m)
length of straight runs unless manufacturer recommends more frequent interval, and one
at center of runs less than 20 feet (6.1 m) but more than 8 feet (2.4 m).

D. Flashing into Masonry:

(NTS: Use next 3 paragraphs, if applicable.)


1. Cap or counter flashing at intersections of roofs and vertical.

2. Counter, Equipment Support, and Roof: 3/4-in. (19 mm) locked and soldered
seams, assembled into units not longer than 16 feet (4.9 m). Join units with three-
inch wide loose locked seams filled with soft grade butyl base compound, before
units are assembled. Mitre corners and join by riveted or locked and soldered joints.

3. Through Wall: Stainless steel or copper sheet, to bond in mortar bed, prevent from
moving laterally, and free from breaks and perforations. Bonding features having
series of continuous ribs, extending transversely, formed to prevent pocketing of
water, and located not more than three inches apart. Where through-wall flashing
connects with other flashing, fabricate a specially formed edge to engage other
flashing.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 PREPARATION:

A. Coordinate work with installation of adjoining work.

3.02 GENERAL:

A. Conform with procedures and methods of installation and applicable details indicated and
described in SMACNA's "Architectural and Sheet Metal Manual" and NRCA's "A
Manual of Roofing Practice."

B. Where installation requires fabrication at the job site, conform to applicable requirements
of Article 2.05.

C. Install standard catalog products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, unless


otherwise indicated.

D. Install work watertight; insure that items are installed in true and accurate alignment with
other items and related work, that joints are accurately fitted, that corners are reinforced
and that exposed surfaces are free of dents.

E. Apply flashing compound at slip joints or wherever metal-to-metal contact occurs and
movement may be anticipated to occur.

F. Fastenings:

1. Fasten sheet metal runs to underlying material by nailing through slotted holes in
flange at three inches on center, unless otherwise indicated or required by
manufacturer.

2. Provide waterproof washers wherever fasteners penetrate flashing.

3. Bolts, nuts, screws and other type fasteners in contact with aluminum shall be
stainless steel.

3.03 WALL FLASHING INSTALLATION:

A. Spandrel Beam Type:

1. Install membrane flashing.

2. Prime surfaces, to receive flashing, with asphalt primer, then brush coat with
asphalt roof coating.

3. Apply flashing with not less than 3-in. (75 mm) lap cemented with plastic cement.

4. Fill anchor bolt holes with plastic cement.

5. Extend flashing into wall and cut 1/4 in. (6 mm) from inside face of exterior wall.

B. Coping Stone Type:

1. Install under coping stones.

2. Provide continuous flashing with interlocked end joints and layer of mortar above
and below flashing.

3. Provide dowels, in coping stones, with metal caps soldered to flashing.

C. Aluminum Type:

1. Form hemmed edges.

2. Extend into masonry wall.

3. Turn up at least 1 in. (25 mm) against backup units.

3.04 METAL CAP FLASHING INSTALLATION:

A. Intersections of Roofs and Vertical Walls:

1. Lap cap flashing over base flashing by at least 4 in. (100 mm) and turn back bottom
edges by 1/2 in. (12 mm)

2. Extend into masonry and turn up on inside as indicated.

B. Concrete or Stone Parapets:

1. Calk with polysulfide sealant, compatible backup material, and wedges.

2. Install flashing into reglet cast or cut into parapets.

3. Lap over base flashings at least 4 in. (100 mm)

4. Turn back bottom edges 1/2 in. (12 mm)

3.05 REGLET INSTALLATION:

A. Secure Reglets to Wall:

1. Provide fasteners 12-in. (300 mm) on centers.

2. Hold precise alignment with abutting sections.

3. Miter corners

4. Calk reglets, requiring calking, with sealant as specified in Section 07150.

B. Snap and Lock Cap Flashings into Reglets:

1. Proceed in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

2. Coat contact surfaces of copper flashings and reglets with bituminous paint.

3.06 GUTTER AND DOWNSPOUT INSTALLATION:

A. Attach gutters as indicated. Attach downspouts to walls with aluminum strap channels
and stainless steel fasteners.

B. Space strap channels every 2 ft. (600 mm) o.c. maximum.

C. Provide elbows, shoes, wire strainers, fastenings, and accessories with downspouts.

D. Conform to approved shop drawings.

3.07 ALUMINUM PROTECTION AND CLEANING:

A. Contact Separation with Dissimilar Metals:

1. Separate by painting metal surface with suitable bituminous paint or by layer of


roofing felt.

2. Coat aluminum surfaces with bituminous paint, if contact with concrete, brick
masonry or mortar after erection.

3. Clean aluminum gutters, downspouts and other exposed aluminum work with mild
soap and water, after erection.

3.08 CONTRACT CLOSEOUT:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01700.
