Course Description
Students in Algebra II are assumed to have mastered those concepts
outlined in the Algebra I. Students study advanced algebraic concepts
through functions, polynomials, rational expressions, complex
numbers, matrices, and sequences and series. Emphasis is placed on
practical application and modeling. Oral and written communication
concerning the language of algebra, logic of procedures, and
interpretation of results are studied. Students study graphing
functions using a transformational approach, including translation,
reflections, dilation, and rotation to general a Αfamily of graphs≅ from a
given graph. They study the close relationship between algebraic
concepts and graphic representations of functions. They also vary the
coefficients and constants and an equation, observe the changes in the
graph of an equation, and formulate generalizations that can be
applied to many graphs.

Specific Objectives:
Daily Objectives will be listed on the board for the students to see each
day before class. The objectives will list what we will be covering in
class on that particular day.
For Algebra II, students will start with a review of Basic Algebra 1
Equations, Inequalities, and Properties; Solving Absolute Value
Equations and Inequalities and will then be tested on their knowledge
of the content. Next we will go into Linear Relations and Functions
which will then be followed by Systems of Equations; Systems of
Inequalities and Linear Programming.
We will also spend some time on Matrices; Polynomials; Radical
Expressions and Equations; Complex Numbers; and Quadratic
Functions.
Depending on time and how well the students are grasping the
material we may touch some on the following:
Polynomial Functions, Conics, Rational Expressions, and Inverse
Variation
Exponential and Logarithmic Functions; Sequences and Series;
Permutations and Combinations; and Statistics.
At the end of the semester we will review and prepare for the
Algebra II TCAP test which will be given on or around December 10-14

Materials
Text: Algebra 2 (Glencoe) which is provided by the school system.
Practice Workbook will be used as deemed necessary to supplement
text.
Graphing Calculators are provided by the school for use in class and on
the TCAP Test.
Students should purchase or already have a graphing calculator for
their personal use outside of school and for future math classes.

Students are expected to bring the following to class daily: paper,

pencil, and a three ring binder or your choice of a notebook. Students
should also have with them their textbook and all completed
assignments ready to be checked.

Tests and Quizzes

Tests will be end-of-chapter (or multiple chapter) assessments. They
will always be announced at least two days in advance. Tests will count
as 50% of your grade.
Quizzes will cover only one or two sections in the text. They will be
announced at least one day in advance to give students time to
prepare for these quizzes. Quizzes will count as 20% of your grade.
Homework will be checked daily using three to five random chosen
problems from the assignment. These grades will be completion
grades only with the exception of sometimes extra points given for
accuracy. In addition, students are expected to check their own work
and make corrections as needed in their notebook for future use to
study for test and or quizzes. Homework will count as 20% of your
grade.
Finally, a daily grade will be given based upon class participation,
readiness for class and the notes they take daily. These will count as
10% of your grade. Notes are an easy 100 if you will just take them.
SULLIVAN NORTH MAKE UP POLICY

Every student will be allowed to make up school work for any

absence, excused or unexcused, if the student makes arrangements
for making up work and completes it within a specific time period.
However, new guidelines grant 80% of the perfect score as the highest
grade a student can earn if they are making up for an unexcused
absence or for a suspension. Also, if a student refuses to attend ISS or
the alternative school placement, the student forfeits the opportunity
to make up school work missed because they chose to take an out-of-
school suspension. Keep in mind that: It is the student’s
responsibility to meet at the teacher’s convenience for make-up
work. For more information about North’s make up policy you can find
that in your student/parent handbook.
