OPENING MATERIALS

What is an example of a Hispanic/Latino person you have seen in the .

media recently? Tell me about them!

Recently, in class we have seen, studied, and spoken about positive things
about Hispanic celebrations, countries, cultures, and language. You might
have seen more positive images of Latinos and Hispanics like in the movie
Coco or the Book of Life, cartoons like Dora the Explorer and Elena of
Avalor. Today, we are going to study some images of Hispanic/Latinos in
the media.
INTRODUCTION TO NEW MATERIAL

Media is a type of communication that can reach many people like TV,
movies, radio, magazines, newspapers

A stereotype is an unfair and untrue belief about a whole group of people.

We are going to be looking at pictures and videos that show

Hispanic/Latino people.

Students will take notes on their reactions as we explore several artifacts

like”
-Abuela with a “chancla” (sandal)
-Large Hispanic/Latino family
-video of Sofia Vergara’s accent from Modern Family
-Jennifer Lopez as a maid
-Yo quiero Taco Bell commercial
-VW Speedy Gonzales commercial

1
Students will take notes of the positive or negative aspects of each artifact

DISCUSSION
Students will reflect with a partner and then aloud about
 What the artifacts made them think
 How they made them feel
 Do you think that these were stereotypes of Hispanics/Latinos?
 What do you think you can do about it?
ADVOCACY-ACTION
As students, you can use skills you already have (like speaking and
writing) to try to make a change! This is called advocacy, when you stand
up for yourself or others to make a change.

Watch this video to see how this student, a 7 year old girl, uses her voice
to try and stand up for herself and others to make a change.
Little Girl Writes Letter to President video
This video shows us how even someone young can use their voice to
stand up for what they thinks is right.

We are going to look at one more advertisement and then you are going
to practice advocating for yourself and others by writing a letter to the
company about the stereotypes in their advertisement.

Guiding questions:
How does it make you feel?
Why is it a problem?
How can they do better?
CLOSING
Now that we have had a chance to learn about the unfair ways that
Hispanics/Latinos can be shown in the media, let’s reflect about it.
Guiding questions:
Now that you know what a stereotype is, can you stand up for yourself
and others? How? What did you think about the letters you wrote?
