Adhesive Pattern
The adhesive is applied to the tape in a wave-like pattern that allows the skin to
breathe and moisture to easily flow through. A quick pat down with a towel is all it
takes for the tape to dry quickly after sweating, swimming or showering. Most
applications can be worn 3-5 days, even through intense exercise, showering,
bathing or swimming. Therapeutic benefits accumulate 24/7 for the entire time the
tape is worn.
Elasticity
With similar elasticity and thickness to human skin, kinesiology tape stretches and
moves with the body and does not restrict movement or create any sensation of
constriction. This allows the tape to be worn safely and comfortably for several
days at a time. Allowing injured muscles or joints to move freely helps them heal
faster than if they were immobilized.
Colors & Patterns
Kinesiology tape comes in a huge variety of colors and patterns. At one time it was
thought that different colors had different therapeutic benefits, but it is now
known that the elasticity, adhesive pattern and method of application are
responsible for the benefits and color is purely cosmetic.
Pain Relief
Although it contains no medications or topical substances, kinesiology tape can effectively relieve
both acute and chronic pain. Its elasticity lifts the skin slightly, which immediately reduces pressure
on sensitive pain receptors under the skin. In addition, its stimulating effect on pain pathways
provides a competitive stimulus that blocks pain signals going to the brain. This is especially effective
for pain from “hot” injuries, where the intensity of the pain is out of proportion to the severity of the
injury.
Precut Strips
Precut kinesiology tape strips were designed to
reduce the amount of time and cutting
necessary to create the most commonly used
applications. As their popularity has grown, so
has the variety of sizes and configurations
available. Some come in serrated rolls, allowing
strips to be easily torn off and applied, while
others come in packages or boxes of individual
strips. Precut strips are now available in X, Y, I
and Edema (fan) configurations in lengths from
6″ to 12″. All that is required is to remove the
backing and they can be quickly applied either
individually or in a variety of combinations,
allowing for significant customization.

General – K-tape can only be applied once, so avoid touching the adhesive side of the tape. To avoid
skin irritation, the ends of each strip should be applied with no stretch. Make sure all ends are applied
to skin, not to other pieces of tape. After applying, rub tape briskly from the center to the ends to
activate the adhesive. Do not rub from the ends toward the center, or you may cause the ends to
peel away from the skin.
Rolls – Cut tape with sharp scissors, being sure to round all corners to prevent ends from peeling
prematurely. Tear the backing 2-3” from one end to create an ‘anchor’– the first part that will be
applied. Apply the anchor end with no stretch in the tape, leaving the rest of the backing intact.
Continue peeling the backing away in small segments as you apply the tape. Removing too much
backing at one time can result in tape sticking to itself, and ruining the application.
Precut Applications – Tear the backing at every serrated line before applying tape. Carefully follow
instructions from product package, video or instruction manual.
Precut Strips – some brands have a serrated backing to create Y or edema strips, but others do not.
If the backing is not serrated, fold it along cut lines, then tear carefully before removing. Apply anchor
end, then remove backing from one section at a time and apply.
Precautions
Do not apply kinesiology tape on any skin surface that is damaged – this includes scrapes, cuts, burns,
sunburn or any type of rash or irritation. Individuals with sensitive skin should apply a test piece for
up to 24 hours before a full taping. If skin irritation occurs, remove tape immediately.
Do not overstretch the tape, especially at the ends. When the ends of the tape are applied to the
skin with stretch, they can pull on the skin and cause rashes or even blistering.
