Climate types in the Philippines

Refer to book
- Discuss each type of climate
- Give examples
- Anticipate possible questions

What is monsoon?
Monsoon is traditionally defined as a seasonal
reversing wind accompanied by corresponding changes
in precipitation, but is now used to describe seasonal changes
[1]

in atmospheric circulation and precipitation associated with the

asymmetric heating of land and sea.[2][3] Usually, the term monsoon is
used to refer to the rainy phase of a seasonally changing pattern,
although technically there is also a dry phase. The term is sometimes
incorrectly used for locally heavy but short-term rains,[4] although these
rains meet the dictionary definition of monsoon.[5]

What is tropical cyclone?

A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by

a low-pressure center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong
winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy
rain. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred
to by different names, including hurricane (/ˈhʌrɪkən, -
keɪn/),[1][2][3] typhoon (/taɪˈfuːn/), tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical
depression, and simply cyclone.[4] A hurricane is a tropical cyclone that
occurs in the Atlantic Ocean and northeastern Pacific Ocean, and
a typhoon occurs in the northwestern Pacific Ocean; while in the south
Pacific or Indian Ocean, comparable storms are referred to simply as
“tropical cyclones” or “severe cyclonic storms”.[4]

What factors affect rainfall distribution?

1. How far inland it is.
2. Topography
3. Temperature
4. Monsoon
5. Winds in Upper Atmosphere
6. Placement of bodies of water.

GREENHOUSE EFFECT

What causes global warming?

Global warming is caused by a phenomenon known as

the greenhouse effect. A greenhouse (or glasshouse) is good for growing
things because it traps heat inside and stays hotter than the atmosphere
around it.
Explain greenhouse effect (See youtube video)
TN:
- Three greenhouse gases- CO2 carbon dioxide, CH methane,
N2O nitrous oxide
 In a greenhouse, the sun’s heat can come in but cannot
go out
 The trapped heat warms the greenhouse
 Similarly, as these gases trap the sun’s heat, they are
called greenhouse gases.

- Greenhouse effect- the trapping of the sun's warmth in a

planet's lower atmosphere due to the greater transparency
of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to
infrared radiation emitted from the planet's surface.

EL NINO/ LA NINA PHENOMENA

What is El Niño?
 El Niño is a climate pattern where the water in the Pacific Ocean near the
equator gets hotter than usual and affects the atmosphere and weather
around the world.
 El Niño climate conditions occur every few years, and they are not
predictable.
 El Niño is Spanish for The Little Boy. It refers to the Christ child and was
named by Mexican fisherman, who noticed the climate pattern often
formed around Christmastime.

What is La Niña?

 La Niña is sort of the opposite of El Niño. During a La Niña, the water in

the same area along the equator gets colder than usual. This, too, affects
weather around the globe and in the U.S.
 According to scientists, La Niña cycles generally create a more active
hurricane season in the Atlantic.
