2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
The optional feature GBFD-117803 Abis Transmission Backup provides end-to-end (E2E)
backup of transmission links over the Abis interface. This improves reliability of transmission
over the Abis interface and reduces service interruption due to transmission faults over the
Abis interface. This improves the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network
reliability.
Abis Transmission Backup provides the following backup modes:
l Satellite transmission backup
In Abis over time division multiplexing (TDM) mode, if the TDM terrestrial
transmission is interrupted, the GSM base station subsystem (GBSS) automatically
switches over services carried on the TDM terrestrial transmission link to the satellite
transmission link. This ensures normal network operation.
Satellite transmission backup consists of the following solutions:
Ring topology: This solution is supported by GBSS8.1 and later versions. It is
recommended for GBSS8.1.
Dual-logical BTS: This solution is supported by GBSS9.0 and later versions. It is
recommended for GBSS9.0 and later versions.
l Abis transmission backup enhancement (E1 backup)
In Abis over IP mode, two E2E transmission links are configured over the Abis
interface: an IP over FE/GE link and an IP over E1/T1 link. The two links work in
primary/backup mode, ensuring transmission reliability over the Abis interface.

In Abis over TDM mode, if the GSM network suffers a natural disaster, the TDM terrestrial
transmission may be interrupted. When this occurs, the GBSS automatically switches over
services carried on the TDM terrestrial transmission link to the satellite transmission link.
This ensures normal network operation.
3.2 Switchover
After the terrestrial transmission link recovers, manually deactivate the logical satellite BTS
to reset it. The BTS then preferentially detects whether the terrestrial transmission link is
usable. If the terrestrial transmission link is usable, the BTS sets up communications over that
link.
Figure 4-2 shows the network topology in which Abis transmission backup enhancement is
not supported.
Figure 4-2 Network topology in which Abis transmission backup enhancement is not supported
As shown in Figure 4-2, an IP over E1/T1 link from the IP over E1/T1 port on the BTS is
converted to an IP over FE/GE link by the router deployed in the IP bearer network. The IP
over FE/GE link is then connected to the IP over FE/GE interface board on the BSC.
In BTS cascading scenarios, if an IP over E1/T1 link is converted to an IP over FE/GE link on
the hub BTS, Abis transmission backup enhancement cannot be enabled for leaf BTSs.
NOTE
The GTMUb/GTMUc board cannot be configured with IPsec tunnels. Therefore, a secure network
topology for Abis transmission backup enhancement is implemented based on co-transmission provided
by the MBTS.
For Abis transmission backup enhancement, the GSM control plane (CP), user plane (UP), and
management plane (MP) must use the same service IP address.
For Abis transmission backup enhancement, it is recommended that the service IP address for the BTS
be carried by a logical IP address.
4.2 Switchover
Abis transmission backup enhancement provides a primary and a backup transmission link.
The two links can be set to the working or non-working state based on their operating status.
The BSC and BTS check whether the link in the working state is functioning properly based
on the link access procedure on the D channel (LAPD) link status. To check whether the link
in the non-working state is functioning properly, the BTS sends a UDP ping detection packet
to the BSC, and the BSC loops the packet back to the BTS.
The interval between sending detection packets is specified by the DETECTTXINT, and the
number of detection packet retransmissions due to timeout is specified by the
DETECTCOUNT parameter.
The procedure for implementing Abis transmission backup enhancement consists of three
stages: working, switchover, and switchback. The following sections assume that the IP over
FE/GE link is specified as the primary link.
BSC (IP over E1/T1) The BSC IP over E1/T1 interface board
BSC (IP over FE/GE) functions as a DHCP server on the IP over
E1/T1 link.
The BSC IP over FE/GE interface board
functions as a DHCP server on the IP over
FE/GE link.
BSC (IP over E1/T1) The BSC IP over E1/T1 interface board
U2000 (IP over FE/GE) functions as a DHCP server on the IP over
E1/T1 link.
The U2000 functions as a DHCP server on
the IP over FE/GE link. As a DHCP server,
the U2000 only provides BTS self-startup
data for the primary link.
If the BTS sends a DHCP request on the IP over E1/T1 or IP over FE/GE link and receives a
response message from the BSC, the BTS can establish transmission links and obtain its
configuration data.
NOTE
Scenario 1: When Abis transmission backup enhancement is enabled for an MBTS, the GTMUb/
GTMUc connects to a main control board such as the UMPT using backplane or panel interconnection
to enable co-transmission over the FE/GE port. The UMPT functions as the DHCP relay for the
GTMUb/GTMUc board, and the DHCP server (the BSC or U2000) is configured on the reverse route to
the UMPT.
Scenario 2: When Abis transmission backup enhancement is enabled for an MBTS, the GTMUb/
GTMUc connects to the UTRPc working in non-GSM master mode using backplane or panel
interconnection to enable co-transmission over the FE/GE port. The UTRPc functions as the DHCP
relay for the GTMUb/GTMUc, and the DHCP server (the BSC or U2000) is configured on the reverse
route to the UTRPc.
Abis transmission backup enhancement can also be enabled during BTS deployment using a USB flash
drive or during operation and maintenance on the LMT.
Figure 4-3 Network topology for using both Abis transmission backup enhancement and BSC
Node Redundancy
The BTS enabled with Abis transmission backup enhancement is controlled by only one BSC
in the BSC node redundancy group. That is, the IP over E1/T1 and IP over FE/GE links for
the BTS connect to the same BSC.
If the primary link becomes faulty, the BTS starts the timer specified by the WTBTBSCS
parameter. If services on the primary link are successfully switched over to the backup link,
the BTS sets the timer to 0. If the BTS fails to establish an OML to the BSC before the timer
expires, the BTS attempts to establish an OML on the primary link to the other BSC in the
BSC node redundancy group.
If an IP over FE/GE link specified as the primary link, a router is required between the IP
network and the two BSCs in the BSC node redundancy group. If an IP over E1/T1 link is
specified as the primary link, the link is divided into two links to connect to the two BSCs in
the BSC node redundancy group in the TDM network.
Unlike the BTS, the eGBTS is managed by the U2000. Therefore, the implementation of Abis
transmission backup enhancement for the eGBTS differs from that for the BTS.
For the eGBTS, there are three planes: user plane, control plane, and management plane. Data
on the three planes are carried over different logical paths. Abis transmission backup
enhancement provides backup for logical paths to improve the reliability of transmission
links.
Abis transmission backup on the user plane is achieved by establishing a primary and a
backup IP path between the BTS and the BSC. On the BSC side, the PATHFLAG parameter
specifies whether a path is primary or backup.
Abis transmission backup on the control plane is achieved by establishing SCTP multi-
homing links between the BTS and the BSC. A control-plane IP address is configured for the
BTS, and an IP address is configured for each FE/GE and E1/T1/STM-1 port on the BSC.
Multi-homing SCTP links are established between the control-plane IP address of the BTS
and each port address of the BSC. Each SCTP link has a primary and a backup path.
For example, if the IP over FE/GE link is specified as the primary link, configure an SCTP
link as follows:
l On the BTS side: Set the LOCIP parameter to the control-plane IP address of the BTS
and the PEERIP and SECPEERIP parameters to the IP address of the FE/GE port and
that of the E1/T1/STM-1 port on the BSC respectively.
l On the BSC side, set the PEERIP1 parameter to the control-plane IP address of the BTS
and LOCIP1 and LOCIP2 parameters to the IP address of the FE/GE port and that of the
E1/T1/STM-1 port on the BSC respectively.
l Enable the primary path to use the control-plane IP address of the BTS and the IP
address of the FE/GE port on the BSC.
l Enable the backup path to use the control-plane IP address of the BTS and the IP address
of the E1/T1/STM-1 port on the BSC side.
Abis transmission backup on the management plane is achieved by establishing an active and
a standby operation and maintenance channel (OMCH) between the BTS and the U2000. Data
on the OMCH in IP over E1/T1 mode is forwarded by the BSC, which needs to be configured
with the route for forwarding OMCH data. On the U2000 side, an IP address is configured.
On the BTS side, two OM IP addresses are configured and the FLAG parameter specifies
whether an OMCH is active or standby.
l The local IP address of the active OMCH is the first OM IP address (BTS_OM IP1) of
the BTS.
l The local IP address of the standby OMCH is the second OM IP address (BTS_OM IP2)
of the BTS.
l The peer IP address of either the active or standby OMCH is the IP address of the
U2000.
For the co-MPT multimode base station, the GSM, UMTS, and LTE modes use the same
OMCH. When the IP over FE/GE link becomes faulty, the OMCH on the IP over E1/T1 link
is used.
Abis transmission backup enhancement does not support the following network topologies:
l An IP over E1/T1 link from the IP over E1/T1 port on the BTS is converted to an IP over
FE/GE link by the router deployed in the IP bearer network. The IP over FE/GE link is
then connected to the IP over FE/GE interface board on the BSC.
l The IP network between the BTS and the BSC is a layer 2 (L2) network.
In BTS cascading scenarios, if an IP over E1/T1 link is converted to an IP over FE/GE link on
the hub BTS, Abis transmission backup enhancement cannot be enabled for leaf BTSs.
NOTE
Abis transmission backup enhancement does not support configuring GSM boards in the secondary
subrack of the BTS.
5.2 Switchover
The user plane, control plane, and management plane use a primary and a backup
transmission link separately: an IP over FE/GE link and an IP over E1/T1 link. The three
planes apply different methods to detect the link status.
On the user plane, the BSC initiates the UDP ping detection on both the primary and backup
IP paths to check whether they are functional, and the BTS loops the UDP ping detection
packet back to the BSC. Based on the UDP ping result, the BSC determines the status of the
two IP paths. On the BSC side, the PATHCHK parameter specifies whether to enable an IP
path check, and the UDP ping detection can be enabled by setting the CHECKT parameter to
UDP(UDP).
On the control plane, the SCTP multi-homing detection is used to determine whether a link
switchover is needed. Each SCTP link has a primary and a backup path. The heartbeat is used
to check whether the SCTP path that does not carry services is connected or disconnected, and
the packet retransmission and acknowledgement mechanism is used to check whether the
SCTP path that carries services is connected or disconnected.
On the management plane, the active and standby OMCHs are used. The BTS uses the UDP
ping detection to check whether the OMCHs between the BTS and the BSC are faulty. Based
on the UDP ping result, the BTS determines whether to switch over OMCHs. On the BTS
side, the CHECKTYPE parameter determines whether to enable an OMCH check, and the
UDPSN parameter specifies the UDP ping session ID bound to an OMCH. A UDP ping
session can be added by running the ADD UDPSESSION command on the BTS side.
The procedure for implementing Abis transmission backup enhancement consists of three
stages: working, switchover, and switchback.
On the control plane, the primary SCTP path is the working path when both the primary and
backup SCTP paths function properly.
On the management plane, the active OMCH is the working path when both the active and
standby OMCHs function properly.
NOTE
The working link is carried on the IP over FE/GE link, and the standby link is carried on the IP over E1/T1
link. When the OMCH connecting the BTS and U2000 is functioning properly but the UDP ping detects a
fault between the BTS and BSC, the active and standby OMCHs on the BTS side are switched over. In this
situation, the BTS can receive downlink OM packets from the U2000 over the IP over FE/GE link but sends
the U2000 uplink OM packets over the IP over E1/T1 link. This causes inconsistent transmission of OM
packets in the uplink and downlink.
With the Abis transmission backup enhancement function, when ONLYOMIP is set to ENABLE(ENABLE),
the BTS does not send the U2000 a response packet after receiving a downlink OM packet over the IP over
FE/GE link in the preceding scenario. If this occurs, the U2000 cannot detect a handshake response and starts
to use the standby OMCH. Accordingly, all uplink and downlink OM packets are transmitted over the IP over
E1/T1 link. This ensures consistent transmission of OM packets in the uplink and downlink.
NOTE
On the control plane, the AUTOSWITCH parameter on the BTS side determines whether an
automatic switchback is performed when the primary SCTP path recovers:
l YES(YES): An automatic switchback is performed and the primary SCTP path is used.
l NO(NO): An automatic switchback is not performed and the backup SCTP path is still
used.
For the eGBTS, the IP network or Ethernet provides the DHCP relay function if the IP over
FE/GE link is the primary link, and the BSC provides the DHCP relay function for the IP over
E1/T1 link that works as the primary link.
l Changing the BTS to the eGBTS that supports Abis transmission backup enhancement
l Changing Abis transmission backup enhancement from the BTS to the eGBTS. This
requires re-planning of configuration data.
To change the transmission type, plan the reconstruction from the BTS to the eGBTS and the
configuration data for enabling Abis transmission backup enhancement of the eGBTS.

switched back to the TDM terrestrial transmission link.
8 Engineering Guidelines
l The existing TDM or SDH network can still be used after IP evolution. It is
recommended that Abis transmission backup enhancement be deployed to improve the
reliability of transmission links over the Abis interface.
l Abis transmission backup enhancement applies only to scenarios where an E2E IP over
E1/T1 link is deployed between the BTS and the BSC.
l In transmission network adjustment scenarios, that is, when the transmission network
changes to the Abis transmission backup enhancement networking mode, services are
interrupted. Therefore, it is recommended that this feature be activated only during off-
peak hours.
For the BTS, Abis transmission backup enhancement requires changes in the transmission
type and takes effect only after the BTS resets.
BTS
Before deploying Abis transmission backup enhancement, collect the following information:
l IP over FE/GE: optical or electrical port, virtual local area network (VLAN)
configuration, local and peer IP addresses and masks, and gateway IP address
l IP over E1/T1: Number of the E1 link on the BSC STM-1 (corresponding to the IP over
E1/T1 port on the BTS), and local and peer IP addresses

NOTE
In cases of backplane interconnection for an MBTS, an IP address is not required for the GTMUb/
GTMUc backplane.
In cases of panel interconnection for an MBTS, an IP address is required for the IP over FE/GE port
(IP12) on the GTMUb/GTMUc board.
eGBTS
Before deploying satellite transmission backup, collect the following information:
l IP over FE/GE: optical or electrical port, VLAN configuration, BTS_OM IP1 and mask,
U2000 IP address and mask, BSC FE/GE port IP address and mask, and gateway IP
address.
l IP over E1/T1: number of the E1/T1 link on the BSC STM-1 (corresponding to the IP
over E1/t1 port on the BTS), BTS_OM IP2, BTS E1/T1 port IP address, and the BSC
E1/T1/STM-1 port IP address.

NOTE
For a BTS, the user-plane or control-plane IP address must be a loopback interface IP address rather
than a port IP address, and the management-plane IP address must be configured on the main control
transmission board.
The BSC service IP addresses include the user-plane and control-plane IP addresses. A BSC service IP
address can be a device or port IP address. If a BSC service IP address is a device IP address, a port IP
address must also be configured.
NE Route Planning
NOTE
When Abis transmission backup enhancement is used with the U2000 remote HA system whose active
and standby servers use the same route on the BTS side, the active and standby OMCHs do not need to
be bound to any standby route. If the active and standby servers have different routes (with different
destination IP addresses and next hops), the active and standby OMCHs must be bound to a standby
route.
When Abis transmission backup enhancement is used with the active/standby route function, two
standby routes must be configured on the BTS side, one for the OMCH on the IP over FE/GE link, and
the other for connecting the BTS user plane or control plane to BSC_IP1.
The management plane and the user plane/control plan cannot share routes or have routes with
destination addresses on the same network segment. This restriction also applies to the management
plane in a mode and the user plane/control plane in other modes for a co-MPT base station.
8.3 Planning
Network Planning
l Ring topology
Port 0 of the BTS connects to the BSC, forming the clockwise connection in ring, which
uses the TDM terrestrial transmission link. Port 1 of the BTS connects to the BSC,
forming the counter-clockwise connection in ring, which uses the satellite transmission
link.
l Dual-logical BTS
The BTS using TDM terrestrial transmission occupies port 0 on the physical BTS as the
main port, and the BTS using satellite transmission occupies port 1 of the physical BTS
as the main port.
Hardware Planning
Interface boards for TDM transmission must be configured on the BSC side.
The GTMU, GTMUb, or GTMUc board must be configured for one of the following 3900
series base stations: BTS3900, BTS3900A, BTS3900L, and BTS3900AL.
BTS3012 series must be configured with GTMUs to support the ring topology solution.

and the BTS.
eGBTS
An E2E IP over FE/GE link and an E2E IP over E1/T1 link are configured between the BSC
and the BTS.
Different transmission links are configured for the OMCHs between the BTS and the U2000:
l The IP over E1/T1 link is converted by the BSC to IP over FE/GE link used for
connection to the U2000 through Ethernet.
l Data on the IP over FE/GE link is forwarded by the router and then transmitted to the
U2000 through Ethernet.
Hardware Planning
Both IP over E1/T1 and IP over FE/GE interface boards are configured for the BSC. The IP
over E1/T1 interface board can be the POUc board, and the IP over FE/GE interface board
can be the GOUc, FG2c, FG2e, GOUa, or FG2a board.
Either of the following BTSs that supports Abis transmission backup enhancement is used:
BTS3900, BTS3900A, BTS3900L, BTS3900AL, and DBS3900. The BTS must be configured
with the GTMUb/GTMUc board, and the eGBTS must be configured with either the UMPT/
UMDU/GTMUb/GTMUc board or both the UMPT and GTMUb (conversion)/GTMUc
(conversion) boards.

8.6.3 Precautions
l During Abis Transmission Backup Enhancement deployment, a BTS must be
deactivated, activated, or reset, which interrupt ongoing services for a short period.
l During primary/backup link switchover, ongoing services are interrupted for less than 1
minute.
l Changing the value of Wait Time Before Link Switchover shortens or prolongs the
interruption, and therefore the default value is recommended.

8.7.3 Precautions
Changing transmission mode to Abis transmission backup enhancement involves changing
OMCHs, IP paths, and SCTP links.
When an OMCH is changed and no OMCH is activated, the OMCH is set to the activated
OMCH. When the OMCH and services work abnormally, the automatic OMCH establishment
procedure is triggered. The procedure ends when the OMCH recovers.
Changing IP path or SCTP link parameters may interrupt OMCHs and services. For details,
see "Service Interrupted After Modification information" in the parameter description.
8.7.4 Activation
Enable Abis transmission backup enhancement on the user plane, control plane, and
management plane.
When configuring Abis Transmission Backup Enhancement (eGBTS) on the CME, you must configure
a single configuration first, and then perform batch modifications if required.
You must perform a single configuration for a parameter before batch modifications of the parameter.
You are advised to perform batch modifications before logging out of the parameter setting interface.
Set parameters on the CME configuration interface according to the operation sequence
described in Table 8-13. For the method of performing the CME single configuration, see
CME Single Configuration Operation Guide.
Step 2 (Optional) Modify objects in batches on the CME. (CME batch modification center)
To modify objects, such as BTSs, GSM cells, TRXs, BSCs, and external GSM cells, in
batches, click the icon on the CME configuration interface to start the batch modification
wizard. For the method of performing batch modifications through the CME batch
modification center, press F1 on the wizard interface to obtain online help.

Link Status, Local IP, and Peer IP. If the value of Link Status is UP and the value of
Local IP and Peer IP are consistent with data configurations, the transmission link is
functional. Otherwise, the transmission link is faulty, and you need to locate and rectify
the fault.
l If the MLPPP link is configured, run the DSP MPGRP command to query the values of
MLPPP Group Status, IPCP Status, Local IP, and Peer IP. The transmission link is
functional only when all the following conditions are true:
– The value of MLPPP Group Status is Up.
– The value of IPCP Status is OPENED.
– The values of Local IP and Peer IP are consistent with data configurations.
Otherwise, the transmission link is faulty, and you need to locate and rectify the fault.
----End
To verify changing IP over FE/GE to Abis transmission backup enhancement, query the PPP
link or MLPPP link status on both the eGBTS and BSC sides.
For the BSC, perform the following steps on the BSC6900 LMT:
Step 1 Run the DSP ETHPORT command with subrack number, slot number, and port number the
same as those of the peer interface board connected to the BTS.
Expected result: The values of Port state and Link Availability Status are Activated and
Available, respectively.
Step 2 Run the PING IP command with its parameters set for an IP link as follows:
l Set Source IP address to the value of Local IP address in the LST ETHIP command
output.
l Set Destination IP address to the value of the BTS user plane or control plane IP
address.
Expected result: Statistics about ping packets are available in the command output.
----End
For the eGBTS, perform the following step on the BTS LMT:
----End
----End
l The value of Operation state is Normal after the DSP SCTPLNK command is
executed on the BSC6900 LMT.
l No ALM-21543 SCTP Link IP Address Unreachable is reported.
Step 2 Trigger a link fault to enable an SCTP path switchover. Check whether the SCTP path
switchover is successful.
l On the eGBTS side, the SCTP path switchover is successful when the following
conditions are true:
– EVT-25890 SCTP Link Path Switchover is reported.
– If the value of Work Address Flag is Active Path in Step 1, run the DSP
SCTPLNK command again and the command output indicates that the value
becomes Standby Path. If the value of Work Address Flag is Standby Path in
Step 1, run the DSP SCTPLNK command again and the command output indicates
that the value becomes Active Path.
l On the BSC side, the SCTP path switchover is successful when the following conditions
are true:
– ALM-21543 SCTP Link IP Address Unreachable and EVT-22915 SCTP Link
Destination IP Changeover are reported.
– The value of Operation state is Normal after the DSP SCTPLNK command is
executed on the BSC6900 LMT.
----End
On the BTS LMT, run the DSP OMCH command to query the OMCH status. If the values of
OM Channel Status and Used State for an OMCH are Normal and In Use, respectively, the
OMCH is activated and working.
Trigger a transmission link fault for the working OMCH. Verify that the working OMCH
switches from the fault OMCH to a functional OMCH.
l If the active OMCH is working, trigger a fault for the route associated with the active
OMCH. Wait five minutes and run the DSP OMCH command with Master/Slave Flag
set to SLAVE(Slave). If the values of OM Channel Status and Used State are Normal
and In Use respectively, the working OMCH has switched to the standby OMCH.
l If the standby OMCH is working, trigger a fault for the route associated with the standby
OMCH. Wait five minutes and run the DSP OMCH command with Master/Slave Flag
set to MASTER(Master). If the values of OM Channel Status and Used State are
Normal and In Use, respectively, the working OMCH has switched to the active
OMCH.

Using the LMT
Using the LMT to enable Abis transmission backup enhancement is not recommended.
When configuring Abis Transmission Backup Enhancement (eGBTS) on the CME, you must configure
a single configuration first, and then perform batch modifications if required.
You must perform a single configuration for a parameter before batch modifications of the parameter.
You are advised to perform batch modifications before logging out of the parameter setting interface.
batches, click the icon on the CME configuration interface to start the batch modification
wizard. For the method of performing batch modifications through the CME batch
modification center, press F1 on the wizard interface to obtain online help.

eGBTS
On the BTS side:
l EVT-25890 SCTP Link Path Switchover
l EVT-25893 Remote Maintenance Link Switchover
On the BSC side:
l EVT-22915 SCTP Link Destination IP Changeover
l ALM-21543 SCTP Link IP Address Unreachable
l ALM-21581 Path Fault
NOTE
When Abis transmission backup enhancement is enabled for the eGBTS, whether to trigger OMCH
switchover on the management plane depends on the status of the user plane links between the BTS and
the BSC, not on ALM-25901 Remote Maintenance Link Failure.

H GBFD-1 A over is carried on the IP path. The mapping between the
18602 IP priority of the user plane data and IP path is
configured through the "ADD TRMMAP" command.
GBFD-1 IP QOS An IP path is of either the QoS type or the non-QoS
18605 A IP type. For example, the IP paths used to carry BE data,
GBFD-1 over AF data, and EF data are all of the non-QoS type.
18622 E1/T1 Different data can share the bandwidth of a QoS-type
GBFD-1 Abis IP IP path. The bandwidth of a non-QoS type IP path,
18611 over however, cannot be shared. For the non-QoS type IP
E1/T1 path, the priority of EF data is higher than that of AF
data, which in turn is higher than that of BE data. The
actual priority of user plane data, however, is set
through the "SET PHBMAP" command.
