The Rain-Kissed Garden

(Monica Islam English 103 Spring 2012)

Bordering the house next to mine, on a small patch of land, stands my garden. Enclosed by a
circular, two-foothigh, wooden fence, my garden is a heavenly abode of yellow orchids, ruby-red
roses, violets and snow-white tulips. Also adorning my garden are green, oval-shaped papayas,
vermilion tomatoes and plum aubergines, among other fruits and vegetables. On an average sunny
morning, my garden looks lifeless under the scorching heat. However, on a rainy day, it offers an
invigorating, surreal experience.

On a rainy day, my garden wears a new look. The foliage is crowned with sheer drops of water.
Glittering dust particles are washed off the crevices of leaves, fruits and petals. Consequently, my
garden comes alive in hues of darker shades. Unable to withstand the force of the downpour, trees
shed their cloaks of leaves, fruits and flowers which blanket the bed of lush green grasses. As the
rain subsides, feathery, winged inhabitants of my garden dip their blood-red beaks into the
overflowing fountain at the centre of my garden. Fiery-red butterflies and olive dragon-flies
venture out, yearning to take the pleasure of my rain-kissed garden.

In addition, on a rainy day, my garden reverberates with its unique rhythm. Accentuated by the
chorus of howling wind, the rain-drops strike a louder chord as they fall upon clusters of leaves.
The fruits thud to the ground, bringing a variation to the pitter-patter of rain. Bringing a close to
its musical performance, the rain always ends in soft murmurs. After a moment of serenity, the
next performance begins with a medley of sharp yet melodious songs by chirping birds. Harmony
prevails in my garden.

Lastly, on a rainy day, my garden possesses an extra-ordinary feel. Drenched in rain, the boulders
are as slippery as an eel. The petals scattered on the ground are as soft as velvet, tickling the bare
feet. Breaking the monotony of petals are rough leaves and gravel. Surrounded by wet foliage, the
ground is murky and appears to be fragile, weighing down with each and every footstep. The stone
slabs around the fountain feel incredibly cool. Varying textures adorn my garden.

Needless to say, my garden is the ideal place for nature-lovers. Immersed in a myriad of pleasures,
the heart hardly wants to part with it. However, on a rainy day, the pleasures in my garden are
heightened due to the lively colours, mellifluous sounds and remarkable textures. Consequently,
time flies by but nothing can distract me from my rain-kissed garden.
