Cancer Is Real

of contrast in temperature, with the colder air flowing under the
warmer air mass, and the warmer air flowing over the colder
air mass.

es of cancer every year and at
an average about 700 people
die annually due to cancer.

Doctor Tukana believes
that if people make a habit of
getting screened, these dis-
eases will be detected early
and the chances of treatment
will be very high and people
will be able to live quality of
life.
From the new cases, more
than 50 per cent are found to
be breast and cervical cancer
in women and the most com-
mon cancer in males is pros-
tate cancer and it is the third
commonest cancer in Fiji.
Meanwhile, children in Fiji
make up less than one per
cent of the new cases and
about half of them survive
treatment.

ing up now, like in the mouth,
skin and cancer of the bowls
and the Health ministry is call-
ing people to give hope and
support to people living with
cancer to make a big differ-
ence in our lives.

New Facilities for Nadi Centre for

Special Education

The Government of Japan
provided FJ$180,000 towards
the Nadi Centre for Special
Education for the construc-
tion of a three-classroom
blocks.
The assistance also in-
clude school furniture and a
four-pan toilet block.
This project was imple-
mented under Japan’s Grant
Assistance for Grassroots Hu-
man Security Projects (GGP)
Programme.
The condition of the school
building was an occupation
health and safety hazard with
tainted floors and walls, leak-
ing roofs and indication of
structural failure, particularly
felt during strong winds and
rainy weather.
The growing number of
students had also resulted in
overcrowding, hence creating
an environment that was not
conducive to teaching and
learning.
The centre’s toilet block
also required urgent upgrade
in order to serve the special
needs of the students.
The centre was not able
to raise the required funds to
upgrade the facilities as most
funding received from Gov-
ernment and donors were
directed towards the educa-
tional needs of students and
general maintenance of the
existing buildings and com-
pound.
Successful implementa-
tion of the GPP project will
directly benefit the 139 stu-
dents, 16 staff and the centre’s
management as it will provide
a safe, special needs friendly,
spacious, teaching and learn-
ing environment.
More than 359 projects
have been implemented un-
der the GGP Programme with
value exceeding USD 24 mil-
lion.
The GGP Programme is
part of the overall Japanese
ODA implemented by the
Embassy of Japan in order to
empower the people and the
community from the grass-
roots level.

buses run on schedule ac-
cording to the Acting Chair-
man for LTA, Mr Ashok Patel.

bay,” Mr Patel added.

buses should they be leaving

A family in Solovi in Nadi is living in
fear after their family home was broken
into on Tuesday.
The Kumar family said the break-in
at their four bedroom house occurred
at around12-1am Wednesday morning
while they were asleep.
The dad, son and mum who wish to
remain anonymous were asleep in their
respective rooms when the incident hap-
pened.
The 25 year old son said three thieves
broke in through the window and broke
into their door to enter their home.
He said the robbers used crowbars
entered their homes, ransacked their
worship place and stole valuable items
in his room. He had been fearful for his
parent’s safety and he would do anything
to protect them from that horrific night.
“The three men got in through the
window. Once they were inside they
entered my room took out my mobile
phones, Chains and camera. I had taken
my medication and was asleep when
they entered my room before heading
straight for my parents’ bedroom,” he
said.
“They took my S6 and J5 phone and
chain and camera which I had just
brought a few months back. I also kept
some cash for my money bank saving
which they also took along with my ID,
Wallet and work bag.
“I woke up at my dad’s screaming and
rushed to his room, I saw this guy wear-
ing the mask and saying we just want
cash and he went out the door.
The other guy who was sitting on top
of my dad was threatening him with a
crowbar threating, I ran back to the sit-
ting room and tried to look for something
to arm myself so I can help my dad.
“I got hold of this swinging board and
tried to hit the robber who was sitting on
top of him but dad managed to push him
off, the robber swung the knife and it hit
my dad forearm and chin.
“I think they turned off the main
switch because the lights were out and
the only way we could see was from a
dim light coming right from outside. After
injuring my dad they ran of outside, we
were so socked we did not know what to
say as we are still in shock.
“After the incident we than called my
aunt who came to take my parents to the
hospital and we called the Police who
have been doing a wonderful job of gath-
ering evidence and interviewing us.

Women’s Day.
“Like their counterparts
around the world, rural wom-
en in the Pacific Islands re-
gion certainly do not have it
easy. They often lack access
to basic services and infra-
structure such as water and
sanitation, electricity, health
and education. They are more
at risk of domestic violence
and unwanted pregnancies
than women in urban areas.
Rural women are also more
exposed to the adverse im-
pacts of climate change like
cyclones and droughts,” Dr
Tukuitonga said.
Building on the momen-
tum of International Women’s
Day 2018, SPC is reiterating its
commitment to work along-
side Pacific Island govern-
ments to improve the lives
and livelihoods of Pacific rural
women.
“The Pacific Community
works in more than 20 sectors
and is renowned for knowl-
edge and innovation in areas
such as fisheries science,
public health surveillance,
geoscience, and conservation
of plant genetic resources for
food security to name a few.
Our programmes inevitably
impact rural women, wheth-
er through policy develop-
ment or capacity building on
the ground. We recognized
early on through our work on
gender mainstreaming and
women’s empowerment that
the needs, concerns and the
knowledge of Pacific rural
women is critical to achiev-
ing the region’s development
goals. Whilst we strive to pro-
vide impactful technical sup-
port on the ground, we also
seek to utilize and engage
with rural women networks
and organisations because
they are often organized and
would know how to mobilize
around pertinent issues we
face today such as climate
change and natural disasters,”
Dr Tukuitonga said.
Research undertaken
by SPC in Fiji, after Cyclone
Winston showed that women
were increasingly taking over
roles of men in villages, as
men had to move into towns
to look for work. At the height
of cyclone Winston, commu-
nity health workers who are
mostly women, in all villages
affected by the cyclone found
themselves in desperate situ-
ations as the wounded came
to them for medical attention
as roads and bridges to the
nearest health centres were
blocked by fallen trees or
electricity poles.
Despite this Pacific rural
women show great tenacity
and resilience when it comes
to living and working in their
environment. Pacific rural
women walk miles to custom
bush gardens to grow food for
their families and they work
for hours gleaning marine life
to sell in the market to earn
an income for their families.

NZ Andrew McGregor to Investigate

Cause of Crash-Cessna 172 Aircraft

has appointed New Zealand-
based Air Accident Investiga-
tor Andrew McGregor as the
independent investigator to
determine the cause of the
crash of Cessna 172 Aircraft
which crashed in Vanualevu
on Monday.
The aircraft registration

around midday on 26 Febru-
ary, 2018. Aviators Merelesita
Lutu and Iliesa Tawalo who
were on that trip had lost
communication with the con-
trol tower.
Mr McGregor specializes in
providing air accident investi-
gation services and forensic
engineering and has been en-
gaged in the past by the New
Zealand Transport Accident
Investigation Commission to
assist with air accident inves-
tigations. In Fiji, he was most
recently engaged by the Fijian
Department of Civil Aviation
to investigate the crash of a
Cessna 172 plane that crashed
in the mountains North East of
Nadi in 2007. He also led the
investigation into the helicop-
ter crash off the coast of Nadi
in 2006.

Investment for Health Facility for Progress

In an effort to uplift the standard of
the Health sector services in the coun-
try, the Ministry of Health and Medical
Services and Ronald McDonald House
Charity (RMHC) signed a Memorandum
of Agreement towards the construction
of family room at Colonial War Memorial
Hospital today.
The family room will be used for par-
ents and carers of long-staying patients
at the hospital and is fully funded with a
cost of $100,000 by the Ronald McDonald
House Charity.
Minister for Health and Medical Ser-
vices Hon. Rosy Akbar commended the
organization for the investment as this
will no doubt bring comfort to parents
and caregivers.
“This public-private partnership is a
great investment not only for the hospital
but provides comfort for those families
that have their children admitted in hos-
pital,” Minister Akbar said.
“In the past I have stressed that the
Ministry of Health and Medical Services
always encourages this sort of partner-
ship and we know for sure that this proj-
ect will greatly benefit all Fijians.”
RMHC company director Marc McEl-
rath said the purpose of this project was
to assist families of seriously ill children
undergoing treatment.
“The funding for the construction in-
cludes; cabinetry, interior designs, furni-
ture and certain fixtures, maintenance,
housekeeping necessary supplies and
printed materials in the designated space
on the premises and too also manage the
room,” Mr EcElrath said.
“We are also renovating and refur-
bishing a room at the Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit (NICU). This rooms will provide
mother a decent comfort for mothers to
rest and wait for their babies as they re-
ceive treatment,” he said.

preventable and cancer is
than 50 per cent are found to
be breast and cervical cancer

cancer in males is prostate
cancer and it is the third com-
monest cancer in Fiji.
Meanwhile, Dr Tukana said
that children in Fiji make up
less than one per cent of the
new cases and about half of
them survive treatment.

now have a coordination hub
for an incident response after
the official opening of its Op-
erations Centre on Friday.
The opening of the newly
refurbished Tavua Emergency
Operations Centre or BSRP is
a 19.37million ACP-EU Build-
ing Safety and Resilience in
the Pacific project (BSRP) and
fully funded by the European
Union and implemented by
SPC.
The objective of the project
is to reduce the vulnerability,
as well as the social, econom-
ic and environmental costs of
disasters caused by natural
hazards, thereby achieving
regional and national sustain-
able development and pov-
erty alleviation in ACP Pacific
Island States.
Through the lessons learnt
from Tropical Cyclone Win-
ston, the BSRP project identi-
fied a need to decentralise di-
saster coordination to ensure
effective preparedness and
response.
For the past year the BSRP
project had worked closely
with the Fiji National Disas-
ter Management project have
worked closely with the Fiji
National Disaster Manage-
ment Office to establish 3
EOC’s around the country,
and 4 more are in the planning
process to be estanlished.
In the face of Tropical Cy-
clone Gita, the EOC’s estab-
lished in Lautoka and Nadi
were able to mobilise and
coordinate disaster prepared-
ness efforts.
Although Cyclone Gita did
not make landfall in Fiji, the
response from the EOC’s in-

Etatoko Main Extension

Works to Improve
Water Supply

Communities living in Etatoko settlement in
Ba will soon benefit from the main extension
works being carried out by the Water Authority
of Fiji (WAF).
About 22 residents reside in Etatoko area is
one of Ba’s elevated areas, where the water
supply could not keep pace with the accumu-
lative demands of a growing population.
Additional homes have also been built that
were not connected to the reticulation system
Currently the community is drawing water
from a borehole that is not sufficient to meet
their needs, and those connected to the reticu-
lation system only receive water seven hours
a day; from 6.00am to 10.00am in the morning
and from 5.00pm to 8.00pm in the evening.

ing WAF customers and those who have been
connected to the system by the main extension
project will receive an improved water supply,
with adequate pressure.
The $200,000.00 project commenced in Jan-
uary 2018, with the objective of having work
culmination in April 2018.
These work involves the laying of 160
lengths of 150mm mPVC pipeline, from the
existing 80mm mPVC main, along the Etatoko
circular road in Ba. This section of the WAF re-
ticulation system is supplied with water from
the Waiwai reservoir.
WAF continues to champion the provision
of a sustainable supply of quality water to the
people of Fiji.

Yaqona farmers in Ka-
davu have been reminded to
properly plan the sale of their
yaqona and its planting mate-
rials.
This after the issue of a lack
of yaqona planting materials
on the island was brought to
the attention of the Assistant
Minister of Agriculture, Hon.
Viam Pillay by farmers of Na-
tumua Village after his visit to
the village’s yaqona nursery
recently.
Hon. Pillay, while respond-
ing to their queries on the is-
sue during an informal discus-
sion, stressed the importance
of managing their harvest
through proper planning.
“Farmers should plan prop-
erly after harvesting to main-
tain planting materials rather
than selling it off completely
because the price of yaqona
is very good now.
“Farmers are selling every-
thing from the kasa (plant-
ing material) to the cuttings
hence the reason that they are
left with no planting material,”
he said.
“I have advised farmers to
plan their farming properly
and to put planting materials
aside for the future so that
they can reap the benefit of
what they are sowing now
while also maintaining it so
that this can also be realized
in the future,” said Hon. Pillay.

en Cowrie Restaurant also in-
scripts the beginning of a new
chapter at Shangri-La’s Fijian

The restaurant and lounge
underwent a complete refur-
bishment and re-opened in
late December last year.
The Golden Cowrie Res-
taurant is headed by Italian
Sous Chef Bruno Bettinazzi
and a team of eight. Chef Bet-
tinazzi worked in Singapore
prior to coming to Fiji .He
worked in hotels throughout
Italy and Switzerland.
Mr Bettinazzi arived in the
country last year to join the

Fonmanu(aka Manu) as he is
known to his family and peers
joined Shangri-la’s Fijian Re-
sort and Spa in 2004 ,when his
father became too ill to work.
He is the oldest child in the
family of five and the respon-
sibility fell on him to support
the family.
In his quest to find a job,it
brought him to the resort
where he start work as fine
dining waiter at the Kalevu
restaurant.
In those early days his
mentors were well known
personalities at the resort like
Simione Cagilaba of Simi’s
coffees,Simi sadly passed
away in 2006.
Learning from others in-
terest him much as being a
bartender, he recalled that he
spent all his spare time with
most of his mentors.
“I would also go and hang
out with them as I wanted to
learn as much as possible,”
he recalls.
“With Simi it was always
about the sequence of service

“He always told me not just
to learn about operations but
to learn about the spirits be-
hind the bar as it has always
been an area I have been
interested in and I would re-
search as much as I could on
the internet,” he added.
Manu says he first joined
the resort out of necessity and
to look after his family and he
did not envisage the career
path that would bring him to
manage an upscale Italian
Restaurant.
“For some it’s always
about the salary but for me
passion for the job is equally
important and critical to one’s
career path and learning,”

“Fresh” is used to describe
the food, and “Fijian” the at-
mosphere, at the premier stop
in Nadi for travelers seeking to
experience or reacquaint with
traditional island flare.
Tu’s Place, on Queens
Road midway downtown
and the airport, has been at-
tracting tourists and locals for
more than a decade by serv-
ing “good quality food consis-
tently…that is both presented
well and is good to taste,”said
co-owner Ratu Felipe Naivau-
kula.
“Fresh is the word that
describes traditional Fijian
food,” added Naivaukula. “I
think true Fijian food is a com-
bination of freshly sourced
foods that are predominantly
healthy – seafood, root veg-
etables, fruit and the coconut.
“The uniqueness is in how
they are prepared,” he contin-
ued. “I remember, as a young
child, the gathering and cook-
ing of food in our village of
Tamasua in the Yasawas. That
to me is the real traditional Fi-
jian fare.”
Kokoda is the signature
dish at Tu’s Place, and is avail-
able both as an appetizer
and entree. Other popular
dishes are rourou balls, fish
and chips and lolo fish. Fijian
curry, a recently added menu
item, also is proving popular,

Twenty year old Bronwyn
Thaggard of Savusavu is de-
termined to create a better
future for her four year old
daughter and herself.
Outspoken Thaggard is
currently pursuing a Certifi-
cate III in Cookery with the
College of Business, Hospital-
ity & Tourism Studies on Nas-
ese campus.
The young lass developed
passion for cooking from a
very young age.
“As the second eldest in
the family and with two work-
ing parents, we basically had
to learn how to cook for our-
selves from a young age. I re-
member I was only 9 when I
started learning how to cook
and I enjoy it to this day,” said
Ms Thaggard.
In 2008, upon completing
secondary education, she en-
said Naivaukula.
Tu’s Place, along with
Queens Road businesses
for a five-kilometer stretch
between Nadi International
Airport and the Martintar
(Mountainview)community,
is returning to normal after a
nearly three-year road proj-
ect that has improved ac-
cess, added parking spaces
and holds the promise of in-
creased commerce.
This marks the restaurant’s
thirteenth year of operation,
which began when Naivau-
kula returned to Fiji with busi-
ness partner Ian Rae after liv-
ing 20 years in Auckland, New
Zealand. Despite “loving life
there, …with trips back home
to Fiji I began to realize there
was so much I missed about
living here, and so began
thoughts of returning home
and starting a small business,“
he said.
Recalling the pivotal deci-
sion, Naivaukula added, “I
had always loved food and re-
membered fondly the days of
being taught so much of the
Fijian way, including cooking,
by my grandmother. Ian had a
relationship with Fiji stretch-
ing back to the 1970s, and
he was just as keen to invest
here.
“The idea evolved and we
decided a restaurant built of

tering at the then Fiji Institute
of Technology (FIT).
“My aim was to become a
chef and I had enrolled into
the first two level of cookery
programme to try and se-
cure my job career. But that
came to a halt when I had my
daughter and she became my
priority but earlier this year I
decided to return and com-
plete certificate III to be able
to better support her.”
“In the years I was home,
I was working as a chef and
bartender at various work
places but at the back of my
mind I always knew I would
come back and finish what I
had started a few years ago,”
she said.
Ms Thaggard is hoping the
skills and knowledge gained
during her tenure at the Fiji

we wanted,” he continued.
“Those were to use fresh, lo-
cal product as much as possi-
ble, and to offer young people
a chance to learn the skills of
cooking and set them off on a
career. We call our kitchen a
learning kitchen.”
Peni Cakau, 21, an aspir-
ing chef who began work at
Tu’s Place 18 months ago on
the wait-staff and now is a
kitchen hand, mans a stove
when there is high volume
-- as each dish is cooked to
order. The Ratu Kadavulevu
School graduate said he de-
cided to become a chef while
in secondary school, and ulti-
mately plans to open his own
restaurant.
Miriama Pulea, 28, is from
Suva and before becoming
a waitress more than three
years ago worked at a DVD
shop in Nadi City. Pulea said
she came to Tu’s Place just
looking for another job, and
found a situation that has
become much like another
home and family.
“It feels like home,” she
said. “It’s like working at
home. They (Tu and Ian) are
like parents. “
Pulea is one of 14 employ-
ees who clientele comes to
know and befriend with re-
peat visits, as staff-retention

choose to study here was be-
cause of the practical work.
We have a more hands-on
training and are exposed to
hosting lunches on campus,
attending to events such as
weddings and even at official

This is a big bonus for us
as students because when we

do what rather we are already
aware and familiar with op-
erations.”
“Also, the programme cov-
ers basically all area of cook-
ery, it not only focuses on
training a chef but at the same
time we have units on food &
beverages, accommodation,
communications and ethics

many restaurants.Asked if any
worker has left during her ten-
ure to move on to bigger res-
taurants at hotels or resorts,
she said, “It’s like no one
wants to leave.”
From behind the counter
at Tu’s Place, where he goes
hands-on in preparing meals
during busy periods, Naivau-
kula offered his perspective
on operating a “teaching res-
taurant.”
“Our staff is our most valu-
able asset,” he said. “The food
they produce and the service
that they offer make Tu’s
Place successful. They have
pride in what they do, and
in turn we are very proud of
them.
“We have developed a
culture that rewards perfor-
mance,’ continued Naivauku-
la. “Pay increases are not an
automatic annual event. Rath-
er, they are based on perfor-

cellent” to “very good” rating
in 555 reviews on TripAdvisor,
Naivaukula said Tu’s Place
has always had a “strong local
clientele.”
“The local clients repre-
sent a cross-section of the Fiji
community, and they come
for everything from fish and
chips to the local dishes they
love but perhaps don’t have
time to cook at home always,

said.
“We often host local gath-
erings for special occasions,

about this restaurant is they
cater for Fijian people, the
type of food that we eat. Like
kokoda. Hardly ever do I find
shops in Nadi to have this kind
of cuisine. So, it’s good. I wish
there were more restaurants
like this. I definitely will come
back, and bring my family.”

ments Inc. will be retained
to underpin Mr Peter McPher-
son’s commitment to FIL as
its Managing Director for at
least the next three years.”
MSVPL states that it
does not intend to make any
changes to Fiji Care Insurance
Limited, adding it intends
to enhance the investments
skills of FIL by including the
introduction of new invest-
ments as well as improved
investment management.
MSVPL will also maintain
the current dividend policy of
50/50 for distribution and re-
investment.
“There is no intention to
make any immediate or im-
minent changes to the busi-
ness structure and the cur-
rent set up will be maintained
overall,” the MSVPL bidder
statement states.
The current Managing Di-
rector, Peter McPherson will
continue to be engaged on a
contract to provide continu-
ity and stability to the busi-
ness after takeover for at least
three years.
The bidder statement says
“MSVPL believes that the take-
over of FIL shares will provide

Aim for 1 Billion Passengers to Fly on
Sustainable Fuel Flights by 2025
On 24 February 2008, a Vir-
gin Atlantic Boeing 747 flew
from London to Amsterdam
with sustainable aviation fuel
in one of its engines. The flight
demonstrated the viability of
drop-in biofuels, which can
be blended with traditional
jet fuel, using existing airport
infrastructure. A flight com-
pletely powered by sustain-
able fuel has the potential to
reduce the carbon emissions
of that flight by up to 80%.
“The momentum for sus-
tainable aviation fuels is now
unstoppable. From one flight
in 2008, we passed the thresh-
old of 100,000 flights in 2017,
and we expect to hit one mil-
lion flights during 2020. But
that is still just a drop in the
ocean compared to what we
want to achieve. We want
1 billion passengers to have
flown on a SAF-blend flight
by 2025. That won’t be easy
to achieve. We need govern-
ments to set a framework to
incentivize production of SAF
and ensure it is as attractive
to produce as automotive bio-
fuels,” said Alexandre de Ju-
niac, IATA’s Director General
and CEO.

by the airline industry’s com-
mitment to achieve carbon-
neutral growth from 2020 and
to cut net carbon emissions

ther 3.9% growth for this year

This has led to the Interna-
tional Air Transport Associa-
tion’s statement that airlines
should expect a rise in pas-
senger numbers to 4.3 billion
in 2018. The association noted
that this would be a 6% rise
from the 4.1 billion recorded
in 2017. “The number of pas-
sengers is expected to in-
crease to 4.3 billion in 2018.

expected to rise 6.0%, slightly
down on the 7.5% growth of

give American and Qantas the

The Fijian Tourism Expo
2018 will be held from 10-12
April at Sheraton Fiji on De-
narau Island.
This meeting was an op-
portunity for the Minister of
Tourism to thank United Air-
lines for choosing Polynesia
as a new destination from its
San Francisco hub. After Aus-
tralia, New Zealand, Hawaii,
Guam, the Marshall Islands,
the Federated States of Micro-
nesia and Palau, the company
continues to expand its air
services to the Pacific.
Ms. Hepburn recalled that
the merger between United
Airlines and Continental Air-
lines in 2010 reinforced their
expansion in the Asia-Pacific
region, including direct flights
from San Francisco to Singa-
pore, Taipei or Haneda in Ja-
pan.
Founded in 1926, United
Airlines is the largest US air-
line in terms of destinations
served: 335 destinations in
50 countries, as well as 216
domestic destinations. This
represents approximately
4,500 departures per day, or
will be highlighting the attrac-
tions of the world’s largest la
goon.
Sally Pepermans, New
Zealand representative with
New Caledonia Tourisme,
points out that the destination
is perfect for clients seek-
ing both on and off the water
– at a relaxed pace or with a

Pacific Fisheries – Leading the Fleet!

The Pacific Community and the Govern-
ment of New Zealand launched an initiative
called Pacific Fisheries Leadership Programme
(PFLP).
Meanwhile, the initiative is aiming national
and regional Pacific fisheries leaders to further
empower themselves to be leaders of change,
address critical priorities, and become even
better managers.
It is expected that well-managed and sus-
tainable fisheries and aquaculture will result in
increased economic and food security.
Consul General of New Zealand in New
Caledonia Mr Bruce Shepherd, signed the
agreement on behalf of the NZ Ministry of For-
eign Affairs and Trade while Dr Colin Tukuiton-
ga, Director-General of the Pacific Community,
signed on behalf of SPC.
PFLP is a 5-year programme that will work
with 125 current and emerging leaders in the
Pacific fisheries sector. Participants will engage
in a modular programme including Leadership
for Effectiveness; Workplace Attachments;
Leadership for Change; and Coaching Support.
They may gain accreditation, including award
courses from the University of Queensland
Graduate Certificate in Leadership. The pro-
gramme is based on real world issues and ex-
perience and intends to adapt regularly to the
contexts and needs of the participants.
Expected long term outcomes for fisher-
ies include improved quality and diversity of
leadership and management of ongoing im-
provement in priority areas and increased co-
operation. Key benefits for participants can be
summarized in three categories: leadership for
effectiveness (basic management and leader-
ship skills and the confidence to apply them);
leadership experience (demonstrated basic
management and leadership skills in a differ-
ent work environment and an opportunity to
observe a range of different leadership styles);
and leadership for change (demonstrated a ca-
pacity to lead a significant initiative, change or
reform).
On signing the agreement, Mr Shepherd
said: “Fisheries is a critical priority for the Pa-
cific and for New Zealand. New Zealand has
met with many regional and national Pacific
fisheries leaders and experts to design a pro-
fessional development programme highly tai-
lored to the requirements of existing and future
Pacific fisheries leaders. We believe the pro-
gramme launched today, and the consortium
implementing it, led by SPC, will deliver a ter-
rific, relevant and impactful experience to all
fisheries programme participants.”
In reply, Dr Tukuitonga said “New Zealand
is a committed and generous partner of Pacific
fisheries and of SPC. SPC provides much of the
scientific evidence for fisheries management
decisions but it is the capabilities of the Fisher-
ies officials that mobilise change and solutions
with the evidence we provide. This is why this
programme is so important, as it is focused on
the people that make the decisions and it le-
verages value across the fisheries sector.”
SPC is honoured to be leading this pro-
gramme and working with an exceptional
consortium who themselves are stand out
specialists in Pacific fisheries and leader-
ship development - FFA, The University of
Queensland, People Focus (NZ) and Centre for
Leadership and Adaptation (CLA).PFLP is part
of the “Regional Roadmap for Sustainable Pa-
cific Fisheries”.

The University of the South
Pacific (USP) started its 50th
Anniversary Research Pre-
sentation Series with an inter-
active presentation entitled,
“Endangered Hammerhead
and Vulnerable Bull Sharks
find Life and Sanctuary in Fiji”
at the Oceania Centre for Arts,
Culture and Pacific Studies
(OCACPS).
Seminar on Shark life led
by Professor Ciro Rico, Head
of School of Marine Stud-
ies (SMS) and Project Team
Leader attracted Fiji govern-
ment officials, community
members, villagers, second-
ary school teachers, private
sector representatives, re-
searchers, staff and students
of the University.
At the event, Professor Rico
talked about the main findings
of the Coastal Shark Conser-
vation Research Project that
they have been conducting at
USP since 2014.
Sharks, Professor Rico
highlighted are among the
most vulnerable fishes in the
world because they have late
age of maturity, low fecundity
and long life span.
The University’s role, he
emphasised is mainly to pro-
vide the baseline data and sci-
entific advice to the Govern-
ments, owners of the qoliqoli
and stakeholders of the areas.
“The decision to protect
something comes from them,
but certainly they cannot pro-
tect something if they do not
know what they have and
how vulnerable is what they
have,” Professor Rico stated.
So, he added, the Univer-
sity’s role is to provide such
data so that they could make
informed decisions.

comprised three (3) volun-
teers (two (2) from Projects
Abroad and one from Frontier
Fiji Marine); Dr Cara Miller
from the School of Chemical
and Biological Sciences, for
statistical analysis; Dr Susanna
Piovano from SMS for fisheries
science; and Professor Martin
Zimmer from the University of
Bremen for isotope analysis.
The researchers have been
looking at the use of coastal
species, mainly Scalloped and
Great Hammerhead, Bull and
Blacktip Sharks of the estuar-
ies, deltas and river-mouths
of Fiji.
The objective of their re-
search was to determine the
use and exploitation of sharks
in the country and also the
ecology and reproductive bi-
ology of these species in those
areas.
“Where they breed, how
long do they spend in the
breeding grounds and par-
ticularly in the nursery ground
where they are protected
from predators, were some
of the questions we looked
into,” Professor Rico said.

The scale of the Highlands
Earthquake disaster is im-
mense, full recovery will take
several years, while the im-
mediate focus of the Govern-
ment remains the restoration
of essential services.
The Prime Minister, Hon.
Peter O’Neill CMG MP, made
those statement during visita-
tion to the earthquake affect-
ed areas in the Southern High-
lands and Hela Provinces.
Prime Minister O’Neill led
a delegation of senior disas-
ter co-ordination officials,
security personnel and donor
agencies to oversee a deeper
assessment of logistical re-
quirements.
“There will be no quick fix,
the damage from this disaster
will take months and years to
be repaired,” the Prime Minis-
ter said from Tari in Hela Prov-
ince.
“The delivery of clean wa-
ter, food and shelter remains
our priority, as well as the res-
toration of other essential ser-
vices including electricity and
communications.”
Speaking with people in
both provinces, the Prime
Minister thanked partners that
are working with Government
to deliver supplies, medical
support and equipment.
“I saw first-hand the mas-
sive logistics operation that is
being conducted by Govern-
ment agencies working with
the private sector and foreign
partners out of Moro Airstrip
right now.
“Our disaster management
team and the PNGDF are us-
ing helicopters provided by
Oil Search and MRDC to de-
liver water, food and medical
supplies, many of these sup-
plies had been transported by
an Australian Air Force cargo
aircraft.”
The Prime Minister said the
heartbreak of the destruction
is being felt across the affect-
ed region.
“Tragically, the Highlands
Earthquake has already
claimed the lives of an esti-
mated more than 100 Papua
New Guineans, with many
more still missing and thou-
sands of people injured.
“The story one mother and
her family was particularly
concerning, as she had lost
six relatives including chil-
dren. They were from Yalen-
da village in Kutubu, and with
their village now destroyed,
have moved to Kemerova vil-
lage. This is a story of tragedy
and loss that that is repeated
in village after village through-
out the disaster area.
“The social damage to our
communities is large, and this
earthquake will be the source
of sadness and sorrow for
generations to come.”
The Prime Minister said

vigilant with ongoing after-
shocks.
“There was another major
aftershock this morning mea-
suring around 6.7 magnitude.
“Aftershocks are likely to
continue, and they will cause

Hyundai has pulled the drapes off an all-
new concept for a sports sedan at the Geneva
motor show.
The medium-sized sedan, which looks like
it could go head-to-head with more premium
rivals like the BMW 5 Series or Audi A6, car-
ries the name ‘Le Fil Rouge’ – which directly
translates to the red wire, or common thread.
According to Hyundai the concept is
claimed to tie together the car maker’s past,
current and future designs in one single mod-
el.
In reality, one insider motoring.com.au
spoke to said that the latest model will never
see the light of day as a production model. In-
stead, the Le Fil Rouge is a statement of intent
from head of design Sang-Yup Lee and newly
appointed VP of design, Luc Donckerwolke, of
how future Hyundais will take shape.
Featuring plenty of flowing curves and
sharp crisp lines, it’s hard not to see some
influences from Peru-born designer, Doncker-
wolke, who made his name heading up Lam-
borghini, SEAT and Bentley design.
At the front of the car, take note of the rede-
signed 3D-style version of the brand’s cascad-
ing grille, says our insider, as it will appear on
a range of Hyundais in the “very near future”.
Beneath its exotic skin, the Le Fil Rouge is
rumoured to come with a development of the
pure-electric Kona’s powertrain. The design
model is also claimed to come equipped with
Hyundai’s latest driverless technology, current-
ly in development.
Set to replace current Kia and Hyundai de-
sign boss, Peter Schreyer, who’s anticipated to
retire soon, Donckerwolke has already made
a huge impression within the car maker, in-
fluencing the final design of both the recently
launched Kona and the Santa Fe SUV.

Manchester City Defeats Arsenal

Manchester City produced
a scintillating performance to
comprehensively beat Arse-
nal for the second time in five
days and extend their lead at
the top of the Premier League
to 16 points.
After beating the Gunners
3-0 in the Carabao Cup final
on Sunday, City dominated in
a toxic atmosphere at a half-
full Emirates Stadium.
Bernardo Silva opened the
scoring in the 15th minute,
beautifully curling in a left-
footed strike into the far cor-
ner after Leroy Sane’s mazy
run.
David Silva finished off a
fine team move in the 28th
minute for City’s second be-
fore Sane did the same five
minutes later.
Arsenal had the opportu-
nity to cut the deficit shortly
after half-time but Ederson
saved Pierre-EmerickAu-
bameyang’s penalty.
The result sees City pull
further away from Manches-
ter United at the top of the
table and marks Pep Guar-
diola’s 100th game at the club
with a win.
Arsenal, meanwhile, stay
sixth, 10 points off the top
four.
Meanwhile,City were
clinical on Sunday in securing
Guardiola’s first trophy at the
club, although Arsenal boss
Arsene Wenger suggested the
game was closer than the 3-0
scoreline suggested.

Kathrine Switzer: Female

The first woman given an official num-
ber in the Boston Marathon will take part
in this year’s London race.
Women were barred from running the
Boston race when Kathrine Switzer, now
71, challenged the ban in 1967.
Entering using her initials - and so dis-
guising her gender - she became known
worldwide when an official tried and
failed to forcibly remove her from the
course.
Switzer completed the 26.2-mile
course in around four hours 20 minutes.

April for the first time as the United King-
dom celebrates the suffrage movement
which, 100 years ago, helped convince
Parliament to agree that women should
be allowed to vote.
“The streets of London have been
an important part of women’s running
history as well as women’s rights,” said
Switzer, who was involved in staging the
Avon International Women’s Marathon in
the capital in 1980.
That event was used to convince the
International Olympic Committee to
sanction a women’s marathon at the Los
Angeles Games in 1984.
“Ever since then I’ve wanted to run
it [the London Marathon] also, but have
been too busy. Now is the time and I
am so honoured and excited to be out
there,” Switzer added.
Switzer, who won the 1974 New York
City Marathon, has been a tireless advo-
cate for women’s distance running, or-
ganising a global series of 400 women’s
races in 27 countries.
She has also advocated for women’s
sports participation throughout the world
and has created “261 Fearless”, a global
non-profit movement that empowers
women through running.
Switzer was inducted into the USA
National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2011
and will wear number 261 in London,
the same number she wore in Boston in
1967.
The London Marathon takes place on
Sunday, 22 April.
