Chapter - 1

Introduction

The management of the flow of goods and services involves the movement
and storage of raw materials of Work-in-process inventory, and of finished
goods from Point of origin to point of consumption is known as supply chain
management. Supply chain management defined as the ‘design, planning,
execution, control and Monitoring’ of supply chain activities with the
objective of creating net value. supply chain management practice draws
heavily from the areas of industrial engineering, systems engineering,
logistics, operation management and marketing. Marketing channels playing
important role in supply chain management. In 1982, Keith Oliver and Booz
Allen Hamilton introduced this term to the public domain.in the mid-1990s
this term gained currency when a flurry of articles and books came out on the
subject.

SCM is a cross-functional approach that includes managing the movement of

raw materials into an organization, certain aspects of the internal processing
of materials into finished goods, and the movement of finished goods out of
the organization and toward the end consumer. As organizations strive to
focus on core competencies and becoming more flexible, they reduce their
ownership of raw materials sources and distribution channels. These functions
are increasingly being outsourced to other firms that can perform the activities
better or more cost effectively. The effect is to increase the number of
organizations involved in satisfying customer demand, while reducing
managerial control of daily logistics operations. Less control and more supply
chain partners led to the creation of the concept of supply chain management.
The purpose of supply chain management is to improve trust and collaboration
among supply chain partners, thus improving inventory visibility and the
velocity of inventory movement.

Main functions of Supply Chain Management are as follows:

 Inventory Management
 Distribution Management
 Channel Management
 Payment Management
 Financial Management
 Supplier Management
 Transportation Management
 Customer Service Management

Literature review: The advent of Supply Chain Management has significantly

improved supply methods in the industry by focusing on deeper levels of
integration and finding ways of reducing cost in each step of the process of
distribution and production while speeding up the process and increasing the
efficiency and output of the supply line which results in quicker service for
the customers and maximized profits for the industry by reducing wastage of
resources due to mismanagement and human error [1]

Literature review: Its categorization has highlighted the popularity of SCM as

a field of research.SCM strategy, SCM frameworks, trends and challenges
alliances and e commerce are the principle areas of research and publication
in the SCM domain. We have categorized the articles in five methodologies
of SCM i.e. exploratory, normative, methodology, literature review and
hypothesis testing. combining and informing on features of supply
management and distribution management. The integration has resulted in the
concept of extended enterprise and the supply chain is now manifest as the
collaborative supply chain across intercompany. [2]
