A Meditation Weekend for Young People

15-17th October
Hampstead Friends Meeting House

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to tell you that this October Wake Up, the Young Quakers
and the World Community of Christian Meditation (WCCM) will come together
for a weekend to share being young and meditative at the beautiful
Hampstead Friends Meeting House in North-West London.

Wake Up are a group of 16-30 year old Buddhist and non-Buddhists who
want a healthy and compassionate society1. They practice meditation,
mindfulness and community as taught by Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned
Vietnamese Zen master2.

The Quakers are a Christian group founded in the C17th who worship in
silence and are deeply committed to social activism3. The Young Quakers
hold regular ‘General Meetings’ where they come together to worship, discuss
the spiritual life, and have fun4.

The WCCM was founded by a Benedictine monk called Father John Main and
are now under the leadership of another - Father Lawrence Freeman5. They
practice meditation using the Christian mantra ‘Maranatha’ which is Aramaic
for ‘Lord, come’6. They’ve got a vibrant and active community of young people

Hampstead Friends Meeting House is a beautiful Quaker house in London,

only 200 yards from Hampstead Heath. The house is located near Hampstead
Underground station at 120 Heath Street, Hampstead, London, NW3 1DR.
This map shows you exactly where: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?

If you are going by public transport then the nearest tube station is
Hampstead. Hampstead is on the Edgware branch of the Northern line. From
the Underground station, go uphill on Heath Street. The Meeting House is one
of the last buildings before you reach Hampstead Heath, and will be on your
right (walking from the Underground station).

If you are going by train then King’s Cross, St Pancras and Euston are the
most convenient stations.

If you are driving or want a lift then please see the section on the registration
form about this. Parking spaces are much sought after in Hampstead, though
more spaces are available on Sunday when residents’ spaces do not apply.
For the environment and your own sake we encourage you to come by public
transport if you can.

How much it costs

Accommodation – free!
Hampstead Meeting House have extremely generously given us the place for
free. Yes, that’s right: free! We ask those who can to give a donation of
between £5-10 to repay the generosity of the meeting house. This is entirely
optional.

Food – optional c£15

For those who are able to pay for food it will be about £15 (this price will be
adjusted depending on how many people are able to pay it but won’t be much
above £15 and might be quite a bit less). No need to pay until the Friday you
arrive. We also recognise that some may not be able to afford this. If this is
the case for you then please simply say so on your registration form in the
relevant section.

If you don’t indicate on your registration form that you are in need of financial
assistance for the price of food then we’ll work out costs on the basis of you
paying the full amount.

Travel – bursaries available

The only price above the optional £15 for food and donation to the centre then
is your own travel. Again, if there are any problems with paying for your travel
then indicate so on the registration form and follow the instructions for
applying for a bursary.

Please come!
Basically, the message is: if the cost of travel and food is too much, just say
so on your registration form and we will help you out. If you can pay, then it
will simply be £15 for the weekend.

Sleeping Arrangements

In order to keep the costs so low we’ve chosen a Meeting House with no beds
or showers. This is standard practice for the hearty Young Quakers, though it
might be a slight change for Wake Uppers and WCCM practitioners. We trust
that it will add to a feeling of simplicity and fellowship!

Since there are no showers, please be prepared to either wash with only a
basin, or not care. Since there are no beds please bring a sleeping bag, and
whatever you need to be comfortable on the floor (a camping roll mat is
always a good bet).

If it will be bad, or impossible, for you to sleep on a floor (due to a medical

condition or anything else) then please register by the 24th September.
Indicate your needs on the registration form and we will try to find you a bed
at a B&B or with a local member of one of our 3 traditions.

The Meeting House has accessibility to the ground floor (main meeting room
and foyer only) by a portable ramp. There is a toilet for people with disabilities
on the ground floor. The main meeting room has a loop system. Please
indicate on your registration form if you have accessibility needs beyond this.

Arrival

Arrival is from 5-8pm on Friday 15th October (with supper at 7pm, and
introduction at 8pm) and departure will be after lunch (between 2 and 4pm) on
Sunday 17th. If you can’t arrive between 5 and 8 then please let us know in
advance on your registration form.

What we’ll be doing

Schedule
Included is a draft schedule so you have some idea of what will be happening.
It is unlikely to be exactly like that on the day, it’s just to give you an idea. The
spirit of meditation, sharing and fun will be present in whatever form it arises.

No hassle room
We’ll keep a small room free throughout the weekend so that whenever you
need some quiet time away from it all, you can get it.

Overseers
We’ll be using a Young Quaker tradition of having certain people on the
retreat who are available for your questions and your support. You can find
them by the ‘O’ badge they’ll be wearing.

Entertainments
On the Saturday evening we’ll have a chance to share with each other some
games, songs, plays and anything else we want to. If you have any musical
instruments, props or ideas then please bring them along!

Helping create a peaceful environment

We ask you kindly not to bring any alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs with you to the
retreat. This is to support each other in making this retreat a safe and
nurturing place for all of us.

How to register

If all this sounds like you’re kind of retreat, then please register using the
attached form by Friday 8th October so that we have enough time to sort out
everything. Please be aware that there are very limited places on this retreat.
They’ll be given purely on a first come first serve basis: so be quick!
