Technical Sheet 4.7: Duplex 22Cr Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe

Product Form Process pipe.

Material 22Cr ferritic/austenitic stainless steel - often referred to as duplex stainless steel.

Manufacturer’s Materials supplied in accordance with this standard shall only be supplied by Company
Approval qualified manufacturers.

Specification ASTM A 790 / A 790M.

Grade(s) UNS S31803 and UNS S32205.

Heat Treatment All materials shall be delivered in the solution annealed (followed by water quenching)
condition.

Chemical Analysis A product chemical analysis shall be carried out for all heats.

PRE = Cr + 3.3Mo + 16N. The PRE shall be greater than or equal to 34.0.

Hardness Per ASTM standard specified in this Technical Sheet. If no hardness is specified by the
ASTM standard, then the maximum hardness shall be HRC 28, HB 271 or HV10 310.

Impact Testing Charpy V-notch testing shall be in accordance with ASTM A 370;

1. Required test temperature shall be -46 deg C (-50.8 deg F) or lower.


2. Absorbed energy is minimum 48 J (36 ft-lbf) average and 36 J (27 ft-lbf) for single
value or corresponding energy level.
3. Materials originally tested by manufacturer at lower temperature or equivalent than
item (1) and (2) above are acceptable. No re-testing is required.

Ferrite Content ASTM E 562 or ASTM E 1245 shall be used for manual point count or AIA respectively
as follows:

1. Ferrite count shall be between 35% and 55%.

Metallographic 1. Samples shall be etched using ASTM E 470 etchant number 98-K3Fe(CN)6 or with
Examination KOH or NaOH.

Extend of Testing All testing shall be conducted on a lot basis. A lot is defined as a maximum of 60 m (197
ft) of pipe of the same diameter, thickness, heat and heat treatment charge.

Non Destructive 1. 10% of all products shall have ferrite content determined using a Fischer Feritscope
Ferrite Measurement ferrite scope.
2. Ferrite content shall be between 35% and 55%.

Hydrostatic Test Pipe shall be hydro-tested in accordance with ASTM A 790 / A 790M.

Repair of Defects Weld repairs shall not be allowed.
