SECTION 10506

METAL LOCKERS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION:

(NTS: Delete references to "benches" if none.)


A. Provide metal lockers, benches, and appurtenances as indicated and specified.

(NTS: Select and list specification sections for inserting into this subsection based on the
following:
1. Specification sections that contain products and construction that the reader might
expect to find in this section BUT are specified elsewhere.
2. Specification sections referenced in the body of this section.)
1.02 RELATED WORK:

A. Section 03300: Cast-In-Place Concrete for concrete locker bases.

B. Section 15806: Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning.

1.03 SUBMITTALS:

A. Submit the following in accordance with Section 01300:

1. Manufacturer's product data, specifications and printed installation instructions.

2. Locker room layout and details of installation.

3. Color chips from manufacturer's complete standard range of colors and matching
colors indicated in finish schedule.

1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01400 and as specified.

B. Provide products of one manufacturer.

1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01610 and as specified.

B. Deliver and store materials in manufacturer's original, unopened, undamaged containers.
Keep containers and materials dry.

C. Handle materials in manner to prevent damage to products or finishes.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 LOCKER MANUFACTURERS:

A. Lyon Metal Products, Inc., Aurora, IL.

B. Penco Products Inc., Oaks, PA.

C. Republic Steel Industrial Products Division, Canton, OH.

D. Or acceptable equivalent product.

(NTS: 1. Locker locations must be indicated on drawings. 2. Locker sizes are indicated
on drawings. 15-in. W by 18-in. D by 72-in. H (single door) is most often used in office
work; 24-in. W by 18-in. D by 72-in. H (double door) in New York. Check specific
requirements for each job.)
2.02 LOCKER DATA:

A. Locations, sizes and quantities indicated on drawings.

(NTS: Edit next paragraph to suit.)


B. (Single) (other) tier; single door with louvers on top and bottom (or at bottom only); (flat)
(sloping) top; 6-in. (150 mm) high legs with closed base (or with no legs, for installation
on built-up base or existing base) (or 4-in. (100 mm) high steel base).

1. Provide hardware for each locker as specified in paragraph 2.04.

2. Provide the following accessories for each locker:

a. Coat Hooks: One ceiling hook with two prongs; three wall hooks with one
prong each. Locate wall hooks on (back and each side) wall.

b. Number Plates: One on each locker door.

2.03 LOCKER MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION:

A. Materials:

1. Lockers: Mild annealed, cold-rolled sheet steel free from surface imperfections and
suitable for receiving a high grade baked enamel finish.

2. Bolts and Nuts: Cadmium plated steel.

B. Construction:

1. Body (sides, backs, tops and bottoms): 24 gage steel. Make exposed sides 16
gage. Flange sides to give double thickness of metal at back vertical corners and
with edges suitably formed to provide a rigid assembly when bolted together.

(NTS: Include next subparagraph a. if applicable.)


a. Make rows of lockers installed back to back with 16 gage end finishing panels.

2. Door Frames: 16 gage steel formed to a channel shape, electrically welded. Add
an additional flange to vertical members to form door strike. Reinforce door to
prevent twisting.

3. Doors: 16 gage one piece steel adequately flanged with channel shape formations
or vertical edges and right angle formations at top and bottom.

4. Louvers: Six, for each location on door.

5. Legs: A continuation of the vertical frame members with rear legs adjustable.

6. Hat Shelf: 24 gage steel, perforated, rolled front and flanged side and back. Locate
approximately 9 in. (229 mm) below top of locker.

(NTS: Use the following subparagraph with flat top recessed lockers.)
7. Recess Trim: 18 gage steel formed 3 in. (75 mm) wide.

8. Other Trim and Closure Pieces: 16 gage sheet steel formed for attachment to
lockers. Include filler pieces, end panels, clips and splice plates as necessary.
Factory finish to match lockers.

(NTS: Use the following subparagraph when flat top lockers are built in with furred
ventilating space above.)
9. Ventilating Plenum on Flat Top Recessed Lockers: Provide locker tops with
openings to allow for forced ventilation through an overhead duct system
(furnished and installed under Section 15806.)

(NTS: Use the following subparagraph when sloping tops are used on exhaust plenum.)
10. Form a continuous plenum in sloping tops for forced ventilation. Provide openings
of required size in sloping tops for ventilating ducts furnished and installed in
Section 15806. Perforate locker tops to ventilate lockers into sloping top plenum.

2.04 LOCKER HARDWARE:

(NTS: Parentheses in text indicate a choice.)


A. Hinges: Provide at least 2-in. (50 mm) wide, full loop, tight pin, five-knuckle hinges
welded to locker frame and securely fastened to door. Provide three hinges for each door
42-in. (1067 mm) high or over. (Provide two hinges for each door less than 42-in. (1067
mm) high.)

B. Locking Device: A positive, automatic type whereby locker door may be locked while
open, then closed without unlocking and without damaging locking mechanism. Locking
device shall engage door frame at three points. Provide lock bar of channel formation
and tamperproof, operating within channel formation of door. Provide rubber silencers
on latching hook, top and bottom of lifting trigger, and top and bottom of locking bar.

C. Keying: Provide lockers with built-in masterkeyed flat or grooved key locks. Supply
two keys for each lock and a total of two master keys.

D. Door handles: Die-cast zinc alloy, chrome plated, either lifting or pull-out type of tamper
proof design.

2.05 LOCKER ACCESSORIES:

A. Coat Hooks: Cadmium plated steel. Place ball points on each prong. Attach with two
bolts or rivets.

(NTS: Change numbering to suit projects or indicate on Drawings and reference below.)
B. Number Plates: Polished aluminum with black numerals not less than 1/2 in. (13 mm)
high. Number consecutively beginning with "1" in each room. Attach plates with split
rivets.

2.06 LOCKER FINISH:

A. Shop Finish: Heavy coat of baked on enamel applied to bonderized and phosphated steel.
Apply finish to exterior and interior surfaces of fronts, ends, backs, sides and tops of
lockers and exposed to view and panels.

B. Color to be selected by Engineer from manufacturer's color charts.

C. Color indicated in finish schedule.

2.07 BENCHES AND SUPPORTS:

A. Provide clear hardwood seats 9-1/2-in. (242 mm) wide by 1-1/4-in. (32 mm) thick by
lengths as shown on drawings, finished with three coats of plastic sealer.

B. Pedestal Supports: 1-1/4-in. (32 mm) O.D. enameled steel tubing with 10 gage flanges
welded to each end. Color to match lockers. Overall height: 16-3/4-in. (425 mm)
including flanges.

C. Wall Supports: Steel standards painted to match lockers.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 INSTALLATION:

A. General: Install lockers in strict accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and in


layout indicated. Install trim and closure pieces neatly, scribing to walls where required.
Adjust doors and latches for proper operation and leave lockers level, plumb, neat, rigid
and free from imperfections.

B. On Concrete Base: Securely anchor lockers to base and attach to wall where abutting and
to each other. Align and level lockers with shims where necessary to provide for
irregularities in base.

C. On Metal Legs: Set and align lockers carefully in position and adjust legs as necessary
for level installation. Attach closed base.

3.02 BENCH INSTALLATION:

A. Lengths indicated.

B. On Pedestals: Space not more than 6 ft. (1829 mm) on center. Attach hardwood seat to
pedestals with screws. Securely anchor pedestals to concrete floor with lag screws or
other suitable anchors.

C. At Walls: Securely attach standards to wall with suitable anchors not more than 6 ft.
(1829 mm) on center. Attach hardwood seat to standards with screws.

3.03 PATCHING:

A. Field touch-up minor scratches.

B. Replace defective materials and finishes having deep gouges and scratches with entire
new locker and at no additional cost to the Owner.

3.04 CLEANING:

A. Remove protective maskings and clean surfaces.

3.05 CONTRACT CLOSEOUT:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01700.
