Question
Hi, BBC. I’m a big fan of your programme. Just recently, I got confused by these three
words: lawyer, attorney and barrister. Could you please tell me the difference between
them? Thanks a lot.
Example
The police officer was trying to arrest me for drink-driving, so I called my lawyer.
Barack Obama was a lawyer before he became the president of the United States.

Insert
Barrister is a term you are likely to hear in the UK, not in the US. A barrister is a lawyer
who traditionally only appears in court. They present a case to the judge and jury. They
usually specialise in specific areas of law.
