I. Course Objective
The purpose of this course is to give students, primarily those in the fields of business
administration and economics, a conceptual introduction to the field of statistics and its many
applications. The text we use is applications oriented and written with the needs of the non
mathematician in mind; the mathematical pre requisite is knowledge of algebra.
Statistical Analysis develops and applies the basic concepts and methods of statistical in
the organization and presentation of business data. Participants develop basic applied skills in the
areas of elementary probability, measures of central tendency and variation, tests of statistical
significance, sampling, and simple linear regression and correlation. The course stresses the role
of statistics in interpreting business data and using the interpreted data in the decision making
process.
The Instructor will rely on lectures, class participation, in-class quizzes, and group activities in
presenting the material. Students are expected to have read the assigned material and worked
problems provided at the end of each major section and chapter prior to the designated class time.
Students should work a sufficient number of the problems to be comfortable with the concept
being presented. Students having difficulties understanding the concept should pay particular
attention to the problems labeled Self-Test in the textbook. Students are encouraged to bring a
calculator -- preferably a laptop/notebook -- to class to ease calculations during lectures, quizzes,
and examinations.
III. Textbook
Anderson, Sweeney, and Williams, Statistics for Business and Economics, 11e.
We will attempt to proceed according to the following schedule. Attendance at the lectures is
mandatory. All absences must be discussed with the professor in advance. Absences from
examinations is strongly discouraged (if not prohibited) and allowed in only the worst of personal
circumstances. Each class session is 150 minutes in duration. Fourteen (14) class sessions plus a
midterm examination and a final examination period are scheduled.
