Giving Up Our Lives - submitted by Jason McLendon
Ezekiel 37:1-14; John 11:1-45
Sacrifice. Love. Sacrificial love. These two words, when used together, represent one of the most powerful acts a human being can ever perform. Of
course, the level of sacrifice might change, but giving up one thing for something else because of love by itself is powerful. How much have you sacrificed
for love? Have you eaten at a restaurant you didn’t like because the person you love wanted to eat there? Have you watched a movie you didn’t want to
see because the person you love wanted to watch it? Would you be willing to move to another state because the person you love took a new job? Would
you be willing to give your life to save the life of the one you love?
These might sound like easy questions with easy answers. Most people who truly love someone would be willing to sacrifice their own life for them.
Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13 - ESV). I have seen that Scripture verse written
on numerous memorials for military personnel, police officers, and firefighters who laid down their lives to save the lives of others…often people they
had never personally met. They made the ultimate sacrifice out of love for their fellow men and women. We know how to sacrificially love because we
were provided the perfect role model in Jesus Christ.
But is there a different way to view this? The Bible often speaks to us on more than one level. In this case, I believe giving up our lives could mean
physically (if warranted) but also spiritually. After all, Paul told us that when we become a Christian, we die to sin and walk in a newness of life (see
Ephesians 6). That doesn’t mean we won’t ever sin again, but it does mean we give up our old life for a new life in Christ! If we have done this, our lives
should drastically transform. This transformation might take days or it might take decades, but every day for the rest of our existence we should strive to
give up our lives to serve God. It will take some sacrifice, but it is for love. If we are willing to give up our lives for our loved ones, how much more should
we be willing to give up our lives for the One who loves us most? What part of our lives can we give up today to serve God? What can we give
up tomorrow? And every day for the rest of our lives…?
