EXPERIMENT 1 (ACID AND BASES)
NAME/TITLE Magic Color Changing Flower
TOPIC Acid and Bases Learning Objective To demonstrate the changes in color that occur when an acid or base is mixed with an indicator which is an example of chemical reaction. Key Science Concepts / Main The change in color when an acid Message or base is mixed with an indicator. Materials 1. Synthetic , white flower 2. Phenolphthalein 3. Ammonia What To Do? 1. Soak the flower with phenolphthalein. 2. Allow the flower to dry for a couple of minutes. 3. Once the flower dries spray it with ammonia to turn it pink! What Happens? The pure white flower turns pink right away. Science Explanation Almost all solutions can be classified as acids or bases . The more acidic or basic something is , the more it reacts with other chemicals. Phenolphthalein is an indicator that is clear when exposed to an acid and turns pink or red when exposed to a base . So, when you spray the clear colored ammonia onto the white flower that have been coated with phenolphthalein , the indicator reacts with the base and turns the flowers pink. When two chemicals come together sometimes, they just ignore each other . Other times they can gain, lose or swap atoms , changing their physical structure . When this happens , a chemical reaction has taken place.
