Assessment for Learning Four Corners Strategy

Four Corners is an assessment for strategy that can be used to gauge your classes understanding

on a specific topic. It is especially useful when discussing a controversial topic. The activity

begins by labelling the four corners of the room Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, and Strongly

Disagree. The next step involves the teacher making a statement that is relevant to the topic

being studied in class such as “Carbon Dioxide emissions are the biggest factor in climate

change”. The students will then move to the corner that aligns with their opinion. The students

will then discuss and debate the topic explaining why they feel the way they do. The teacher can

then listen to the discussion and determine which students have facts and background

information on the topic and which students are uninformed or misinformed on the topic.
