INTRODUCTION


Prof Chan and Taipei Philharmonic Chorus (TPC) Chorus Master, Mr John Ku, met at a
conference in Seoul and discussed the possibility of collaborating together. This
discussion led to the invitation for OMM to open this year’s Taipei International
Choral Festival (TICF). The TICF is a world-renowned festival which brings together
musicians around the world for concerts, workshops and masterclasses. It is an
honour for us to open this year’s TICF together with the TPC in the majestic National
Concert Hall, representing Singapore while sharing our music with an international
audience.

After this opening concert, we will host them in Singapore just two weeks later and
celebrate OMM’s 9th Anniversary together. We hope that you will enjoy the
experience and make new friends both within and beyond the orchestra.

While on tour, we look forward to advancing OMM’s social mission of sharing the joy
of music-making with others. The community engagement committee has, in
collaboration with HSBC Taiwan, put together an exciting programme to teach
disadvantaged children about orchestral music. Thank you to all those involved for
supporting and making time for this. We hope that it would be a meaningful
experience for everyone involved too.

Thank you to the tour committee for their hard work putting everything together for
the tour. Thank you too for your patience and support as we navigated various
challenges together. We are very grateful to the following organisations for their
support: Singapore International Foundation, Lee Foundation, HSBC and National
Arts Council (Singapore), as well as the close guidance of Prof Chan and the OMM
Board of Directors. We would also like to show our appreciation to Raffles Institution
and Nanyang Girls’ High School for their loan of cello flight cases.

The Taipei and Singapore premieres of The Music Makers, our namesake, marks a
significant milestone for OMM. We have come a long way in our pursuit and
achievement of good music making; let us all come together again to make good
music on tour and back in Singapore.

Many elements make this tour a unique one: premiering The Music Makers, an
overseas community project and collaboration with new friends in Taiwan as well as
back in Singapore. Treasure the journey and enjoy the tour!

Taipei International Choral Festival

Taipei International Choral Festival (TICF) is one of the most prestigious and extensive choral festivals
in Asia. Founded by Professor Dirk DuHei and Taipei Philharmonic Foundation in 1996, it started as a
bi-annual event, and is now held annually in the end of July through the beginning of August. Every
year, several outstanding choirs around the world, as well as excellent local artists, gather in Taipei to
appeals to not only tens of thousands of local audiences, but also a great number of choral fans from
South-East Asia. In addition to the concerts, there are also several workshops and master classes,
presented by clinics from all around the world, during the festival.

In fact, TICF have hosted over 200 concerts for more than 50 outstanding choirs from all Continents
of the globe since its founding in 1996. Kammerchor Stuttgart (Frieder Bernius, cond.) is one of the
returning choirs in 2012 TICF, which marked their 4th trip to Taipei. Other former invited choirs
include The Tallis Scholars (Peter Phillips, cond.) and The Choir of King's College (Stephen Cleobury,
cond.) from UK, The Real Group and Gustaf Sjökvist Chamber Choir (Gustaf Sjökvist, cond.) from
Sweden, Rajaton from Finland, Cantemus Children’s Choir (Szabó Dénes, cond.) from Hungary, APZ
Tone Tomšic (Sebastjan Vrhovnik, cond.) from Slovenia, among others. These concerts, for years, are
always showcases of choral excellence to the audiences, and learning opportunities for the workshop
participants in the festival.

Workshops and master classes play very important parts in TICF. Every year, hundreds of participants
from Taiwan and all corners of Asia (China, Hong-Kong, Malaysia, Singapore… etc) gather in Taipei to
attend these workshops.

Yu-Chung John Ku (古育仲)

Yu-Chung John Ku is the Music Director of Taipei Philharmonic Chorus, and an assistant professor in
the Chinese Culture University, teaching in both the Chinese Music Department and the Western
Music Department. He represents Taiwan in the International Federation of Choral Music, and is one
of the members of the IFCM Asia-Pacific working committee.

Ku has conducted concerts around the world, including U.S.A. (Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony
Hall, etc.), China (National Performing Arts Center of Beijing, etc.), Canada, Austria, Bulgaria,
Hungary, Hong-Kong, Italy, Macao, Philippines, Singapore, and so on. He also serves as the Chorus
Master for Helmuth Rilling, Frieder Bernius, Günther Herbig, Jahja Ling, ShaoChia Lu, WenPin Chien,
Lan Shui, among others.

Ku is an adjudicator in the World Choir Games (the former “Choral Olympics”), Oriental Concentus
International Competition, North Sumatra International Choir Competition, Singapore Youth Festival,
Hong-Kong Schools Music Festival, and several other competitions. He has led master classes in many
countries, and was a guest speaker in American Choral Directors Association’s convention.

Yu-Chung John Ku is a doctoral candidate at the College-Conservatory of Music in University of

Cincinnati, and holds a master degree from Temple University.

I-Chiao Shih - Mezzo Soprano

Born in Pingtung City in Southern Taiwan, I-Chiao Shih graduated with a Master’s degree from the
Graduate Institute of Musicology, Taipei National University of the Arts, and a Bachelor’s degree from
the Tunghai University Department of Music, and academic education in Tainan Women’s College in
Arts and Technology. Shih studied under Professors Tsuimin Tsai, Yu-Ping Fan and Yi-Lin Hsu.

In October 2008, Shih went to continue her studies in Germany, and completed an Art Song
Performance Diploma (Kuenstliche Ausbildung) and Soloist Diploma (Konzertexam Ausbildung) from
the University of Music, Trossingen (Staatlichen Hochschule fuer Musik Trossingen) and studied under
Professor Monika Moldenhauer. She also received her Master of Music degree in Chamber Music from
the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin and studied under  Professor Wolfram Rieger.

Shih has been invited to attend master classes by Kurt Widmer, Irwin Gage and Thomas Hampson.
She also studied under renowned art song pianists Wolfram Rieger and Irwin Gage.

Not just an opera singer, Shih has often been invited to appear at art song recitals or oratorios, and
has been invited for two consecutive years to perform at recitals at the Bayreuth and Messkirch Castle
Music Festivals. Since the 2012 orchestral season, Shih has been an appointed member of the Theater
Ulm ensemble. Shih has performed by invitation in Hong Kong and the Okinawa Prefectural
University of Arts.

She is a member of the Association of Vocal Artists of R.O.C.

Taipei Philharmonic Chorus (台北北愛樂樂樂樂合唱團)

Taipei Philharmonic Chorus, founded in 1972, has established an extensive repertoire and a
reputation as one of the most prestigious choruses in Taiwan. Members of the chorus are music lovers
from all walks of life. Their love of music, combined with the vision of the conductors, has allowed the
Taipei Philharmonic Chorus to greatly increase the number of performances it gives each year. Since it
is one of the leading performing groups in Taiwan, Taipei Philharmonic Chorus is awarded and
sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural from 1994 to date as an “Outstanding Performing Group”.

The chorus has been collaborated or invited to perform with famous orchestras and conductors in
many different festivals and countries, such as Russian State Symphony Orchestra, Asian Youth
Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok, Taiwan
National Symphony Orchestra, among others.

The repertoire of the Chorus includes Bach’s “B Minor Mass”, “St. John Passion”, “St. Matthew
Passion”, “Christmas Oratorio”, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, Mendelssohn’s
Symphony No.2, “Elijah”, “Midsummer Nights’ Dreams”, Brahms’ Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem,
Mahler’s Symphony No.2, No.8, Orff’s “Carmina Burana”, to name a few.

From the 140-voice chorus, a smaller 40-voice choir is selected to tour and to perform more selected
musical works. This group, known as “Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir”, has an impressive history
of overseas performances, and had become the major professional choir in Taiwan.

The chorus’ current music director is Yu-Chung John Ku, with associate conductor Wei-Chun Regina
Chang, under the artistic direction of Prof. Dirk DuHei.

Chong Wai Lun

Malaysian born Chong Wai Lun self-taught his way to a full scholarship at the Yong Siew Toh
Conservatory of Music, majoring in trumpet performance. In 2005 he joined the SYC Ensemble
Singers - a community choir that specialises in contemporary and newly commissioned choral works
– and found his passion for choral music. In 2011 and 2012, Wai Lun represented Singapore in Asia
Pacific Youth Choir organised by International Federation of Choral Music (IFCM).

Wai Lun obtained his Master's Degree in Kodály Music Pedagogy at the Kodály Institute of Liszt
Academy of Music, where he studied music pedagogy under its director, Dr László Nemes, choral
conducting under Dr Peter Erdei and sang with the Ars Nova Vocal Ensemble conducted by Dr Katalin
Kiss. In 2014, Wai Lun was one of the few masterclass students of Simon Halsey and Grete Pedersen
chosen to conduct the Berlin Radio Choir during a public performance.

In 2015, Wai Lun completed his Master's Degree in choral conducting at the Royal Welsh College of
Music & Drama. Besides assisting Neil Ferris in conducting the RWCMD Chamber Choir, he was also
an active member of BBC National Chorus of Wales under the direction of Adrian Partington.

Wai Lun is currently the Music Director at the International Festival Chorus of Singapore (IFC). He
serves as choir instructor at Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School, St Andrew's Secondary School and
East Spring Secondary School, and is also a part-time teaching faculty at the Yong Siew Toh
Conservatory of Music. He has recently worked with the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra of Singapore
in preparing the choir for Distant Worlds: music from Final Fantasy.

International Festival Chorus of Singapore

International Festival Chorus of Singapore (IFC) is a community choir open to everyone residing in
Singapore.   Since its formation in 1974, the IFC has worked under the direction of numerous
conductors, and amassed a wide range of repertoire from all classical to contemporary genres. IFC's
philosophy of inclusion has helped expand its membership to include Singaporeans and expatriate
men and women from different corners of the globe regardless of their age and musical
backgrounds.

The IFC objectives are: 1) to promote music and choral singing; 2) to support lifelong learning and
music education; and 3) to create international goodwill and understanding.

IFC presents two formal concerts every year, coinciding with its 2 concert seasons ending in May and
in December. As a non-profit organization, the choir holds regular workshops and charity
performances as part of its mission to bring choral music closer to the Singaporean community.

• No larger than 100ml containers in (only) one clear bag
• Checked baggage: 35kg for cellists, 25kg for the rest
• Note that luggage cannot exceed 1m on one side. No single bag should weigh more
than 32kg. There is no limit on number of bags, only the total weight.

This hot pot chain is known for it’s
“Beauty” soup base, packed with collagen
and full bodied flavors! They open till late
at night so it is a perfect spot for late night
suppers and post rehearsal gatherings! Do
make a reservation beforehand.

My favourite coffee place in the whole of
Taiwan, very very good coffee (and also
because it’s a 5 mins walk from my place)
The owner of the café roasts his own
beans (somewhere in Dan Shui) and they
have a very good blend of coffee! He is
also frequently invited by Singapore cafes
to judge their latte art throwdowns! Quote
“Hsiao Shan” for a warm invite or even a
cuppa on the house”. It’s cheaper to
takeaway coffee from this cafe than to
enjoy it there.
⽶米郎棋 Melange Café

Known for their strawberry waffles and
café au lait! Expect a huge crowd (sadly,
they don’t accept reservations)

right outside the train station)
Many Taiwanese come here to pray for
protection and wellbeing. Perhaps we
should pay the temple a visit before the
concert?
Mao Kong Gondola
Take Wenshan-Neihu Line to Taipei Zoo
Metro Station, then walk to Maokong
Gondola Taipei Zoo Station
It costs NTD50 to ride the Gondola. If you
do a bit of walking around Mao Kong
Shan, you will find many hidden tea
houses along the winding lanes. Tea-
sipping is a must when you are at Mao
Kong Shan, Taipei's tea plantation.

souvenirs de la France
‘The Sound Of The Horn XVI - Memories of
France’
Since 2002, He Zhong Mou (何忠謀) has
held ‘The Sound Of The Horn’ Concert
Series. A fervent advocate of works for the
trumpet in solo and chamber settings, he
frequently commissioned local composers
to compose distinctly Taiwanese works for
the instrument. The programme for Mes
souvenirs de la France is to mark the 10th
year since his return from France. This
concert will include classic French trumpet
pieces in hopes that the audience would
be able to experience the romance of Paris.

дружина Светлане Спајић) i s a
Belgrade-based a cappella women's
ensemble dedicated to traditional Serbian
singing. дружина means the gathering of
friends and fellowship. Founded by the
mother of Baltic traditional songs, Svetlana
Spajic, the group’s ethereal   harmonies
take the audience through a charismatic
and extraordinar y per formance. By
championing the use of traditional sound
in their modern per formances and
through their stirring performances, they
have earned the nickname ‘Defenders of
Tradition’.
