Weather Variables Long-term Lab:

This assignment requires the use of an internet weather site each day. It is very difficult to find
weather maps days after so KEEP UP with this assignment. You will be creating a book of weather in the
United States throughout our weather unit. You must self-assess and include this sheet with your book.
The required date range for each map will be announced on the hw link for this assignment as we begin
to learn each variable. Time stamp must be included for full credit on each weather map print out. You
must self-assess and include this on the back cover of your book. KEY Your self-assessment

Day 1: Page 1-2: Temperature Maps. Go to http://www.ametsoc.org/amsedu/dstreme/ and click on

“Temperatures” under Surface Maps. Include two weather maps showing temperatures within a 24
hour period but at least 6 hours apart. Draw in isotherms every 10˚F on both, you can use the
isotherm map on the website to check your work or help you. Explain the differences between the
two maps, how did the temperature change over time? Use your knowledge of earth science to
explain.

Day 2A: Page 3: Temperature & Dewpoint Maps. Include a both a temperature map and dew point
map side by side using the two links below. Define dewpoint. Describe the current weather in your
own words for Port Washington. Compare the dewpoint and temperature in Port Washington what
does this difference indicate about our current weather.

Day 2B: Page 4: Relative Humidity Map. Include a weather map showing Relative Humidity.
Describe Relative Humidity in your own words. What weather instruments are used to find Relative
humidity? What was the RH in Port Washington on that date? Circle the area of the USA with the
highest relative humidity. Also circle these areas on the two maps on page 3. Describe the three
variables for this circled location and how they interrelate. http://www.usairnet.com/weather/maps/current/relative-

Day 3-5 Pages 5-7: Air Pressure Maps. Over the course of a few days present three Air Pressure
maps that are at least 8 hours apart by clicking isobars and pressures on
http://www.ametsoc.org/amsedu/dstreme/. On the first map identify a mid-latitude cyclone and
make a prediction about what type of weather it will bring over the next few days, indicate the
direction you expect the cyclone to move. Under the second map comment on how the isobars have
changed and if the storm followed your prediction. Also describe what weather instruments are used
to find air pressure? Under the third map, if you can still find the mid latitude cyclone describe
where it is now and how it changed or indicate new pressure system. On each map highlight the area
where you expect the fastest winds to be occurring.
