Fertilizer Labels and Calculations

Notes
Primary Nutrients: N-P-K
Secondary nutrients: Ca, Mg, S
Micronutrients: used in small quantities by the plant: Fe, B, Cu, Cl, Mn, Mo, Zn, Co, Ni

Calculation Practice:
Example:
We have a grass lawn that needs to be fertilized and Jake has found a bag of 16-8-8 in our
garage. If we need to put 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft of our 3,000 sq ft lawn, how much
fertilizer do we need to apply?

Recommended Nitrogen Rate X Area of Square Feet = 6.25 X 3= 18.75 lbs of fertilizer
% of Nitrogen in Fertilizer 1,000
(write in a decimal)

1 X 3000 = 6.25 X 3= 18.75 lbs of fertilizer

.16 1000

1. We have a garden that needs to be fertilized and Jenny has found a bag of 10-6-10. If we
need to put 2 pound of phosphorus per 1,000 sq ft and our garden is 2,000 sq ft, how
much fertilizer do we need to apply? 16.6 lbs of fertilizer

2. We have a flower bed that needs to be fertilized and Cassie has bought a bag of 20-5-7.
If we need to put 2 pounds of potassium per 1,000 sq ft and our flower bed is 500 sq ft,
how much fertilizer do we need to apply? 1.43 1bs of fertilizer

Example:
We have a grass lawn that needs to be fertilized and Jake has found a bag of 16-8-8 in our
garage. If we need to put 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft of our 3,000 sq ft lawn, how much
potassium was applied?

K= Recommended N rate  X % of K in the fertilizer  = 6.25 x .08= .5lbs of Potassium

% of N in fertilizer (write as decimal)

1 X .08 = 6.25 X .08 = .5 lbs of Potassium

.16

3. We have a garden that needs to be fertilized and Jenny has found a bag of 10-6-10. If we
need to put 2 pound of phosphorus per 1,000 sq ft and our garden is 2,000 sq ft, how
much potassium was applied? 3.33 lbs of Potassium
4. We have a flower bed that needs to be fertilized and Cassie has bought a bag of 20-5-7.
If we need to put 2 pounds of potassium per 1,000 sq ft and our flower bed is 500 sq ft,
how much nitrogen was applied? N= Recommended K rate x % of N
% of K
5.71 lbs of Nitrogen
