Thoughts on Dawnlord Vyros

Vyros1 in a Nutshell
For all his personal offensive potential, Vyros1 is a surprisingly good support 'caster. He
supports most Retribution units/models (particularly his myrmidons) and only really suffers
from a lack of focus, which his feat can negate for a turn. Vyros1 works best with a good mix
of warjacks and infantry, especially Dawnguard. Finally, don't discount Vyros1's ability to
dish out the smackdown on his own; with a warjack to provide the Flank bonus, Vyros1 is
perfectly capable of crippling a warjack/warbeast in one turn.

All in all, Vyros1 is a good warcaster who supports a straight-ahead, go-forward-and-

smash-face play style while also allowing for a startling amount of nuance and finesse. He's

smash-face play style while also allowing for a startling amount of nuance and finesse. He's
probably one of the Retribution's best starting warcasters for new players, as his abilities
are very straightforward and his stats grant survivability that the other warcasters lack.
Despite this, he also offers surprising depth for advanced players.

Spell List and Feat

Vyros does a lot to support his army with his spell list, the most notable things being
Mobility speeding himself and his warjacks up and getting them through terrain, and
helping keep models alive with Inviolable Resolve. With both active, Imperatus becomes a
monster in every sense, or alternatively he can make a unit of Dawnguard ARM 19.

Getting the most out of Vyros1's feat requires some careful planning, and order of
operations is key. In general, you want to position Vyros1 and his infantry to take on as
many single-wound models as possible, and to maneuver his 'jacks to target heavier,
tougher threats. Have Vyros1 camp all his focus, pop his feat, and send him and then his
infantry out to slaughter as many single-wound infantry as possible. You've got two
choices at this point: 1) wait until all your 'jacks are topped off with focus before activating
them, or 2) filling one or two 'jacks up and activating them to keep the murder machine
rolling, powering up the rest. The Phoenix's Combustion special attack is fantastic in this
sequence, as it's an auto-hit attack with a decent damage roll.

Note that the focus allocation happens after simultaneous attacks (such as Combustion or
tramples) have been fully resolved. For example, a Phoenix with one focus catches several
enemy models with its Combustion attack. The player rolls damage against each model in
the area, perhaps boosting once to ensure a kill. You may then allocate one focus per model
killed, and the Phoenix that made the Combustion attack may be allocated to if it's within
Vyros1's control area. Let's say the attack killed four models. You could give that Phoenix
three focus, which it can use to buy additional attacks; one focus just became three. In this
way, 'jacks can "fuel themselves". A Sphinx could charge into an infantry swarm, make both
initial attacks, and then keep attacking with the Heavy Force Claw, each kill granting another

focus to buy more attacks. This works well on anything with Reach, especially the Griffon,
Phoenix, Imperatus and Hyperion. Special mention should be made for Imperatus, as it can
use Sidestep and Vyros1's feat to essentially chain attacks and movement - move up, stab
someone, get a point of focus, move 2", stab someone else, get another point of focus,
move another 2", start making lots of attacks. Note however that Sidestep is only on initial
attacks, so you only get two moves.

Useful Combos and Synergies

Reach Myrmidons - Vyros can really start taking advantage of Flank if he' got more
targets available. These are also useful for Invictors if taken.
Myrmidons with guns - Bird's Eye offers survivability in forested tables, and access
for landing effects like the Banshee's Momentum on models behind the front lines.

Typical Army and Strategy

Vyros does well with a durable army and helps by making it more durable. He has a hard
time running a lot of jacks at once and fully fueling them, though he can try to on his feat
turn. Vyros can't go wrong with Imperatus or Dawnguard units. Vyros himself has a couple
of options each turn, either camping his stack, or trying to push with Mobility and
allocation. Generally speaking, the alpha strike turn will be the one the feat gets used as it
can allow a myrmidon with reach to clear out a ~3" arc of lower DEF infantry through buying
attacks with focus from the feat.

If you build Vyros1 'jack heavy, you're placing a lot of focus on your feat turn (as Vyros1
really does not have a high enough focus stat/focus support to run multiple 'jacks
otherwise), and the feat can be rather feast or famine, depending on your opponent's list;
while excelling against infantry (especially swarm armies), Perfect Execution is less useful in
Mangled Metal games. You're unlikely to get too many additional focus points when you
have to box a 'jack to do it. Additionally, against models like Man-O-War Shocktroopers or
an army running light on infantry, you've only got a slim chance of killing enough models to
make the most of this feat. If you can spread enough damage around before popping the
open in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API pdfcrowd.com
feat, you considerably improve your odds. If you rely on the feat, it would really be worth
focusing on the single turn where you try to wreck everything, so using fast/ranged models
and Lanyssa Ryssyl to ensure you get there easily.

Drawbacks and Downsides

Vyros has limited focus for what he wants to do. Being conservative and camping adds to
survivability but means he will have almost no impact on the table. He also has a very
straightforward playstyle that some players may find uninteresting.

Other Notes
A word about Bird's Eye: this ability is constantly underestimated. At first, it seems like it's
just a nice ranged buff... and it is, especially since most myrmidons have some kind of
ranged attack. The Manticore in particular loves Bird's Eye, as it can fire off three shots, or a
POW 12 AOE anywhere, anytime. It means that infantry and 'jacks cannot screen anyone
from the Hydra's POW 15 shots. What makes Bird's Eye really interesting is that it's also a
great melee buff. Drawing LOS through forests and clouds—for both Vyros and his 'jacks—
is huge. Remember, you need LOS to a target to charge it. Combined with Mobility and
some canny use of terrain, you can essentially ensure that Vyros1 and his Myrmidons will
get the alpha strike off against most forces. This is the Legion's bread and butter, and now
it's yours to exploit.

Thoughts on Legions of the Dawn

The most note-worthy elements of this theme are the tier two bonus and the fact that like all
the "forces of" theme forces there is no restrictions on the jacks you can take other then the
standard non-character one. This opens up an interesting build with a pair of 'Jack Marshal-
ed Daemons on the Sentinels, the pair complementing each other nicely. Round out with a
few solos and battlegroup jacks for a potent and unusual army.

Thoughts on Dawn's Talon

This list helps Vyros' myrmidons get up the table pretty quickly. It likes having armor, but
many will take Heavy Rifle Teams to fill the unit requirement and maximize the number of
points available for more warjacks and tier benefits. Overall, it presents an armor list with
few other benefits that has mild effectiveness against lists that it can hit.
