Battle Mages are a somewhat frail unit primarily used for battlefield control and light melee.

Battle Mages are also fairly competent in melee combat. They have two attacks with moderate

models when Force Bolt can not be used effectively (for example, against models that cannot
be targeted by spells). It's very useful when fighting cheap infantry, especially with ARM
below 15. The first punch can kill one trooper, allowing the Battle Mage to follow up and
potentially kill a second. Also can be used to charge a unit head-on, and then use Beat Back
moves to push laterally, opening up a hole in the middle. This can be used to allow powerful
small-base shooters such as Eiryss1 and Stormfall Archers to penetrate a small-based
screening unit. It can be used in the same way to allow small-base models like a Mage Hunter
Assassin or Nayl to get at a screened 'caster.

Force Bolt is an exceptionally powerful ability for controlling the battlefield. It can push/pull
models in or out of threat range, disrupt Shield Walls, open up charge lanes, knock enemy
models over cliffs or into water, and pull enemy models into Covering Fire templates. Because
the drag is an on-hit effect, it can be used against low-DEF, high-ARM targets (e.g. Khador
and Menite 'jacks, Dire Trolls) to pull them into a nice charge lane for your myrmidons. In

combination with the House Shyeel Magister's shorter ranged Whip Snap, this is a great way
to set a heavy melee myrmidon up for the charge. It also has Critical: Knockdown, which can
be used fairly reliably against large, low DEF targets as long as you attempt multiple shots.
Knocked down units do not block LOS and have no melee range, making it easy to shoot over
them or escape from melee. It can be very difficult to hit targets in melee due to the in-melee
penalty. Remember, however, that models can cast spells while in melee, and there are no
penalties while a model is casting against a target that they are engaging. Thus, one way to
improve accuracy is to walk into melee and cast there. This is situational, but against
Trollbloods and Protectorate armies it sometimes works.

Force Barrier makes the Battle Mages more resilient against ranged attacks than might
otherwise be expected and completely immune to blast damage. This has some synergy when
used with models that deal significant amounts of blast damage, like the Arcantrik Force
Generator, Stormfall Archers, and Adeptis Rahn. This makes it possible to toss blast markers
around in close quarters without worrying about harm to the Battle Mages. Note that force
barrier applies only to ranged attacks, not magic attacks or spells. Against Druids of Orboros
or Hex Hunters you should really think twice before committing this unit.

Combos & Synergies


Adeptis Rahn - His feat gives a them an 18" threat range in addition to any movement
granted by Telekinesis. With boosted attack and damage rolls, one unit is deadly to
most enemy warcasters. Chain Blast is also useful if you are using the Battle Mages in
melee.
Garryth - Force Bolt allows you to open up charge lanes and let Garryth do what he
does best.
Lord Arcanist Ossyan - Quicken gives the Battle Mages more threat range and makes
them nearly untouchable to enemy ranged and magic attacks, especially when hiding
behind terrain. Shatter Storm can be used with impunity since they are immune to blast
damage.

Stormfall Archers - Since the Battle Mages are immune to blast damage, Stormfalls can
launch their AOE attacks into melee without fear of hurting them. This is primarily
useful against low ARM, high DEF models. Just be aware that they are immune to
blast damage, not on hit effects, so don't set your own Mages on fire with Star Strike.
Sphinx - The Runespear Cannon was probably designed with Battle Mages in mind; it
makes it easier for them to hit, which can be useful since there aren't any simple ways
to boost unit magic attack rolls.
