have one more point of STR, their MAT is good, their RAT irrelevant, standard DEF and low
ARM. They have low DEF in melee and rely on Force Barrier to stay alive against ranged
attacks. This means auto-hit effects like Electro Leap are especially damaging to them.
Force Bolt is an exceptionally powerful ability for controlling the battlefield. It can push/pull
models in or out of threat range, disrupt Shield Walls, open up charge lanes, knock enemy
models over cliffs or into water, and pull enemy models into Covering Fire templates. Because
the drag is an on-hit effect, it can be used against low-DEF, high-ARM targets (e.g. Khador
and Menite 'jacks, Dire Trolls) to pull them into a nice charge lane for your myrmidons. In

combination with the House Shyeel Magister's shorter ranged Whip Snap, this is a great way
to set a heavy melee myrmidon up for the charge. It also has Critical: Knockdown, which can
be used fairly reliably against large, low DEF targets as long as you attempt multiple shots.
Knocked down units do not block LOS and have no melee range, making it easy to shoot over
them or escape from melee. It can be very difficult to hit targets in melee due to the in-melee
penalty. Remember, however, that models can cast spells while in melee, and there are no
penalties while a model is casting against a target that they are engaging. Thus, one way to
improve accuracy is to walk into melee and cast there. This is situational, but against
Trollbloods and Protectorate armies it sometimes works.
Force Barrier makes the Battle Mages more resilient against ranged attacks than might
otherwise be expected and completely immune to blast damage. This has some synergy when
used with models that deal significant amounts of blast damage, like the Arcantrik Force
Generator, Stormfall Archers, and Adeptis Rahn. This makes it possible to toss blast markers
around in close quarters without worrying about harm to the Battle Mages. Note that force
barrier applies only to ranged attacks, not magic attacks or spells. Against Druids of Orboros
or Hex Hunters you should really think twice before committing this unit.

Stormfall Archers - Since the Battle Mages are immune to blast damage, Stormfalls can
launch their AOE attacks into melee without fear of hurting them. This is primarily
useful against low ARM, high DEF models. Just be aware that they are immune to
blast damage, not on hit effects, so don't set your own Mages on fire with Star Strike.
Sphinx - The Runespear Cannon was probably designed with Battle Mages in mind; it
makes it easier for them to hit, which can be useful since there aren't any simple ways
to boost unit magic attack rolls.
