1) Design a monster based off of predetermined characteristics.
2) Use collage techniques such as ripping, cutting and pasting paper to fill in spaces.

Assessment:
Students will be assessed on their innovation and creativity with provided materials.

Materials:
• “Leonardo the Terrible Monster” by Mo Willems
• Large white paper (preferably thicker than plain)
• Variety of coloured construction paper
• Pencils
• Scissors (optional)
• Glue sticks
• Dice
• “Roll-a-Monster” guide (1 per student)

Introduction:
Story (10-15 min)
Start by leading the students to the carpet and remind them that we have been reading
monster stories the past few days. The stories we have read are poetic. The next one
however, is not.
Read “Leonardo the Terrible Monster”.
Ask students to think about what kind of moods monsters can have. What colours could
we use to portray these moods? Keep these in mind.
Setup and Preparation (5-10 min)
Calling by group, have the students return to their desks. Have student helpers help
hand out a Roll-a-monster sheet, a die, and a white piece of art paper to each student.
In the meantime, the rest of the class needs to get out a pencil and an eraser.
Students will be warned ahead of time that they are not allowed to touch anything until
I have explained the activity.

Body:
Activity (1 hour)
Step 1: Roll die to determine your monster’s body parts, starting with the head. When it
comes to the legs, arms, eyes, nose, and mouth, students can role the die a second time
to determine how many of that part their monster will have. Draw them to scale to fill
the page.
Step 2: Once all your body parts are in place, you can add extra detail if you think it
could use more.

Step 3: At the back table, there will be a variety of construction paper for the students
to use. They will rip pieces of paper to fill in their monster’s parts. They can cut pieces to
show variety in texture but they need to have ripped pieces as well.
Provide/go through an example while explaining steps.

Closure:
Students are to clean up all their materials and hand their monsters into the side table to be
displayed later.

Sponge:
Monster colouring pages or roll and draw more monsters (colour with crayons, markers, etc.).
