1. The Islands of Japan (p. 223) 
Japan has four large islands, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, all made from volcanic activity. 
Japan is on unstable Earth, so there are lots of Earth quakes each year. 
 
2. The Early People of Japan (p. 224) 
Hunters and gatherers were believed to be the earliest people living in Japan. Earliest religion is the 
Shinto religion, they believed the world was filled with spirits.  
 
3. Korea and the Spread of Chinese Influence in Japan (p. 225) 
Buddhism spread from China to Korea. Buddhism was highly encouraged in Japan and was 
influenced from China. 
 
4. A Court of Refinement (p. 227) 
Buddhist temples were a center for community activities. The government made less Buddhist 
temples 
 
5. The Literature of the Court (p. 228) 
Poetry was very popular, wrote a small poem for each things they did, poetry contests were 
popular. After poetry, diaries were very popular, and influenced from China. 
 
6. Life in the Provinces (p. 230) 
Land donors gave land to the nobles, and they lived in luxury. Peasants were poor and miserable, 
and had to do lots of work everyday.  
 
7. A Warrior Government (p. 232) 
When the government started to be lead by samurais and warriors. Even the people in power were 
put down by the government. 
 
8. Development of Religious Denominations (p. 234) 
Buddhism changed to reflect the needs of Japanese people. Believers would be reborn in a better 
place, a paradise.

9. A Unified Culture (p. 235) 
Buddhism influenced the arts of Japan. The same medieval techniques are still used today, like Zen 
or rock gardens. 
 
10. An All-Powerful Shogunate (p. 238) 
Chaos arrows before the Tokugawa shogunate took over. The country was reunited after they got 
into war. 
 
11. Control of the Classes (p. 240) 
The four classes were samurais, artisans, peasants, and merchants. The ruler of Japan was called the 
shogun. 
 
12. A New and Different Culture (p. 240) 
They put aside special places for entertainment and trade. They made the poem technique called 
haiku. 
 
13. Southeast Asia (p. 241) 
Influenced from religions and practices Vietnam and India. Islam came in Southeast Asia during 
the 1500’s.
