TRENDS REPORT
WALLCOVERING
There are many trends in the wallcoverings industry. Color trends include metallic gold and soft, tone-on-tone prints. Other
than color trends, tactile, textured paper is very popular. Textures imitating nature such as animal prints, stone, wood and
bark are well-represented in the industry. Also gaining interest is interactive wallcoverings which can include a number of
features such as “paint by number” patterns for children and electronics housed in the coverings that can make the paper
light up and/or project sound. The textured papers add an extra unexpected touch to the design process. The paint by
number and electronic covering trends are a touch more gimmicky.
FLOOR COVERING
The color trends in flooring are towards blonde shades and gray tones, moving away from the dark and true wood tones
which used to be popular. This trend has emerged from the technological advances in laminate, vinyl and porcelain. Wood-
look flooring in these materials is another trend. Piggy-backing on this is a tendency to use longer and wider planks which
are now available. Lastly, manufacturing these materials in the USA is a growing trend, keeping pace with Americans interest
in sustainability.
The trends in architectural surface materials can be summarized under these four categories: texture, geometric shapes,
reflective surfaces and bright colors. Texture is being experimented with by the materials used and also the composition of
the materials. An example is a quilted wool ”tile” used for acoustic purposes. The trend of geometric shapes is relatively
straightforward; nearly all the surfaces I researched offered option of geometric patterns. The reflectiveness is achieved by
manipulating glass and mirror materials. Lighting is also used with LED sheets and light responsive textured acrylics. Color
trends are currently bright colors, which is particularly suitable for a wide range of commercial applications.
ARCHITECTURAL MILLWORK
One trend present in architectural millwork is blending wood and Corian to produce a material that is malleable for curved
applications. LED lighting incorporated into the millwork is another trend. In addition to lighting, architectural millwork is
being manipulated to also integrate technology such as IT, data communications, HDMI and other AV applications.
COST ESTIMATIONS
WF-2: LOFT HORIZON POLISHED GLASS TILE WF-2: GLASS TILE – JUICE BAR
TILE: $18.99 per unit; 1 unit covers 1.11 sqft TILE SIZE: 2” x 16”; sold per square foot ~ 5 pieces
$18.99/square foot
EAST WALL IS 22’W X 9’H = 198 sqft
EAST WALL SQUARE FOOTAGE: 191.7 sq ft -> 192 sqft
198/1.11 = 178.38 [round up to 179]
192 sqft + 10% overage = 221 square feet
179 x $18.99 = $3399.21 -à $3400.00
221 sq ft x $18.99 = $4196.79 à $4197.00
GROUT: 25 lb for 200 sqft
TOTAL: $4197.00
5 bags @ $23/ea = $115
Glass tile is a durable product. The color is painted on the back side so it won’t chip off. It is scratch and chemical resistant. Glass tile is low-maintenance and
easily cleaned. It is a sustainable product which emits zero-VOC’s and meets NSF and ANSI codes as a wall-covering. Aesthetically, the glossy finish and
geometric pattern will enhance the sophisticated simplicity of the health center reception area and juice bar.
The paint will be from the Benjamin Moore Natura line in a high-gloss finish. It is zero-VOC, zero-emissions. compliant with all NSF and ANSI codes and
certified as asthma and allergy friendly. The high-gloss finish is easy to clean with a sponge and mild cleanser. The high-gloss finish will also enhance the
saturated color’s visual impact. Bright reds and oranges will add pops of energizing color to the health center and serve to create a optimistic, positive
atmosphere.
FLOOR COVERING
The carpet for the office is suitable for medium level traffic. The carpet tiles to be installed behind the reception are suitable for high traffic. Carpet was
chosen for both these areas to prevent fatigue and pressure on the employees standing at the desk and sitting in the office.
The safety zone sheet selected for the exercise room is extremely slip resistant, which is a crucial feature in an exercise room where people will be sweaty.
The porcelain tile in the juice bar mimics marble, while being suitable for commercial traffic. The colorway will complement the white glass tiles and brightly
saturated paint.
The porcelain tile to be installed in the entry/foyer will look clean and modern. The tiles are slip resistant and appropriate for commercial traffic.
ARCHITECTURAL SURFACE MATERIALS
Since these are all vertical wall application materials, “wear & tear” is not the biggest consideration. It is important that the materials are water, mold and fire
resistant, which they all are.
The reclaimed gym floor as the reception feature wall sets the tone for a sophisticated and thoughtfully designed interior. The paper composite material
attached to the front of the reception desk is a complementary brown tone. More importantly, it can be applied on curved surfaces – the front desk has a
curved façade. It also provides acoustical sound absorption so the reception area doesn’t become echo-y.
The white glass tile in the juice bar is easily cleaned and will provide a backdrop against which the brightly colored juice will stand out.
MILLWORK
The quartz composite material chosen for the counter tops will resist cracks, stains and damage. The metal base molding is very durable and recommended
for commercial use. The vertical application laminate millwork will resist dents, chips and is easy to maintain.
