EXCAVATION INDUCED GROUND DEFORMATIONS: PILE RESPONSE

AND MITIGATION MEASURES USING DEEP CEMENT MIXED WALLS

ABSTRACT

This thesis investigates pile response due to excavation induced ground movements using the finite
element method considering the three-dimensional geometry. Numerical models were verified
using centrifuge tests and case histories found in the literature. Design charts were developed based
on the influence factors to establish the excavation induced pile behaviour by conducting
parametric studies varying the depth of excavation, soil properties, wall support system, pile fixity,
number of piles and pile location. Applicability of Deep Cement Mixed walls to minimise
excavation induced ground deformations was also investigated considering planar walls with steel
inclusions and arched walls with bored pile restraints.
