Level: 6th grade (Steps in English 3)

Age: 12
No of students: 12
Time: 45 minutes

Main aim:
to develop the ss’ reading skills, reading for details- scanning (true/false exercise, finding
certain words in the text and providing definitions) and matching pictures with proper
descriptions- skimming)

Subsidiary aim(s):
to practise the ss’ speaking skills (describing photos, asking some questions have you ever
seen royal guards?..) and listening skills
to revise/recycle/pre-teach vocabulary related to clothes while describing royal guards’
traditional uniforms and vocabulary used in the text (ravens, uniforms, initials, look after,
superstition, a nickname)
to get the ss acquainted with the British culture (royal guards, where in London you can spot
them, why they are considered a tourist attraction, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London)
to revise Present Simple tense ( the tense is used while talking about royal guards)

Assumed knowledge:

the ss know vocabulary related to the topic (describing clothes, some vocabulary used in the
text, such as: a uniform, Buckingham Palace, tourists)
the ss know Present Simple tense (the form and the context in which it is used)

Anticipated problems:
1) The ss may have difficulty comprehending the text due to an unfamiliar topic or
vocabulary used
2) The ss may lack interest in the lesson
Solutions:
1) The teacher activates the ss’ background knowledge to get the ss acguainted with the
topic that migh be unfamiliar ( talking about her trip to London, encouraging the ss to
describe the pictures). The teacher explains vocabulary that might cause problems
with understanding
2) The teacher provides the ss with engaging warm-up activities ( showing them some
pictures of royal guards, bringing her own photos taken in London, encouraging them
to be active by asking thhem questions, watching a short film Changing guards)

Evaluation:

1.Have all the lesson aims been achieved? To what extent? Why not?
2.Which aspects of planning or conducting the lesson have been satisfactory?
3.How could the lesson (which aspects) be improved?
1.The ss didn’t manage to complete exercise number 3 ( some of them did but the rest of the
class had to fill in the definitions at home due to the scarcity of time). Reading the text,
translating the story and revising/pre-teaching vocabulary were time-consuming. As a
consequence, some ss didn’t manage to complete the last task.

2.Warm-up activities (pictures, photos, asking the ss some questions, talking about the
teacher’s own experience) were satisfactory and enjoyable for the ss. They helped to create a
context. Moreover, asking the ss to give examples of unfamiliar words and phrases that can
hinder the understanding of the text facilitated reading tasks (words that later on will appear in
exercises). Watching a short film was enjoyable for the ss and served as a break and respite
after reading exercises..

3. The text was interesting but there was little time to focus on culture since the exercises
were mainly aimed to develop the ss’ reading skills. I would recommend to spend more time
on warm-up activities ( discussion between the ss-do you know something about royal
guards).Nevertheless, the ss were satisfied.
