Procedure of Eye

Surgery in India
What is Eye Surgery

• It is also known as Ocular surgery. An

Ophthalmologist performs eye surgery.
• The need for an eye replacement is
dependent on many conditions.
• From corrective treatments, for instance,
corneal haziness to orbital implants provide a
successful solution to vision problems.
Types of Eye Surgery

• Cataract affects both eyes and is more common in the adults (60 and above).
• The surgical procedure is safe and successful and is recommended for the
people who have vision loss hampering their daily life functions.
• If the patient is suffering from any other eye disease then cataract surgery is
not recommended.
• The time duration of the surgery is thirty minutes and is performed under
minimal sedation. Artificial lens is inserted in place of original ones to restore
and improve vision.
3 Types of Cataract Surgery

1. Extracapsular Cataract Surgery-

• If the lens is too opaque for Phacoemulsification,
then Extracapsular Cataract Surgery is performed.
• Suturing is involved in the surgery and the recovery
period is longer.
3 Types of Cataract Surgery

2. Intracapsular Cataract Surgery-

Intracapsular Cataract Surgery includes big
incisions and complete removal of entire
lens and surrounding capsule. This
procedure is rarely used.
3 Types of Cataract Surgery

3. Phacoemulsification-
• Phacoemulsification is performed under
local anaesthesia.
• To dissolve the hazy lens the most
common type of ultrasonic vibrations are
used.
3 Types of Cataract Surgery

3. Phacoemulsification-
• Phacoemulsification is performed under local
anaesthesia.
• To dissolve the hazy lens the most common type
of ultrasonic vibrations are used.
Corrective Surgery

• This is the most popular eye surgery.

• The two most common corrective eye surgery
methods include Photorefractive Keratectomy
(PRK) and Laser-assisted in Situ Keratomileusis
(LASIK). Laser eye surgery can correct
Hyperopia, Astigmatism and Myopia thus
reducing the chances of using corrective lenses.
Orbital Surgery

AKA Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery or

Reconstructive Surgery that is conducted in the
periocular area. It includes eyebrows, eyelids,
tear/lacrimal system and orbit/eye socket.
Glaucoma Surgery

Conventional Surgery Laser Surgery

In glaucoma surgery, the procedure (laser or

non laser )is designed to perform one or
more than that basic results.
1) In order to increase the drainage of the
same fluid.
2) To decrease the production of
intraocular fluid or aqueous humor.
Lid Repair Surgery

Surgical Therapy
There can be many defects in the upper eyelid
involving one third or less of the horizontal length
of the upper eyelid.
Pentagonal wedge excision is removal of large
lesions.
There are various other wedge excisions that can
correct lid kinking, ectropion, and notching.
Presbyopia Surgery

• LASIK surgery reduces the need for glasses

(reading glasses) and is helpful for correcting
monovision.
• LASIK surgeon is able to correct the distance
vision of one eye (usually the dominant eye),
and makes the non-dominant eye mildly near-
sighted.
Squint Eye
• Squint Eye occurs due to the imbalance of
muscles, childhood illness, refractive errors,
nerve palsy etc.
• Most people think that it cannot be
corrected after a certain age, but the truth is
that it can be corrected at any age.
• Advancement in medical science has made
the process of treatment more efficient and
delivering high success rates
Squint Eye

Causes of Squint Eye

1. Congenital Squint
2. Long Sightedness or Hypermetrophia
3. Childhood Illness
Refractive Eye Surgery

If the patient is suffering from vision-related problems,

then refractive eye surgery is the solution. The most
commonly performed surgery is Laser assisted insitu
keratomileusis (LASIK).
Refractive Eye Surgery

Refractive surgery is a good option for you in the

following cases-
• If the objective is to decrease the dependence on
glasses.
• Acceptance of inherent risks and side effects.
• Have an appropriate refractive error.
Scenario of Lasik Eye Surgery in India

What is LASIK Eye Surgery?

• A type of refractive surgery that is
performed to correct the problems related to
astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia.
• Consulting the best and experienced
ophthalmologist is the first part of the eye
treatment journey.
Scenario of Lasik Eye Surgery in India

• For elimination of usage of eye correcting

glasses laser eye surgery is the treatment
solution.
• Procedure is less time consuming as it takes
five to ten minutes to get completed.
• Quick recovery is also another advantage of
the procedure.
What are Different Types of Lasik Eye Surgery?

1. Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

2. Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) Eye Surgery
3. LASIK (laser in situ Keratomileusis) Eye Surgery
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

• To treat astigmatism, farsightedness and nearsightedness laser eye procedure is performed.

• Eye conditions such as mild to moderate can be treated by Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK).
• Before the introduction of the LASIK procedure, Photorefractive Keratectomy was the most widely
practiced among all refractive surgery procedures.
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

• Cornea is reshaped by using laser

surgery.
• An ultraviolet light, which is a cool
pulsing beam.
• It is produced by the laser and that is
used on the surface of the cornea not
beneath it.
Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) Eye Surgery

• Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) is performed for the

people suffering from mild degree of farsightedness and serious
degree of near sightedness.
• Approximately one hour is the time duration of the procedure.
• Healing after the procedure is less time consuming.
• It is not very popular procedure compared to other laser eye
surgeries.
LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) Eye Surgery

• Laser is performed beneath corneal flaps to reshape the cornea.

• It is the most popular procedure among all the eye surgery procedures.
• To improve vision and to eliminate the use of vision correction glasses or
to treat refractive errors Excimer laser is performed.
• The procedure in very effective in the process of changing the shape of
the cornea.
Lasik Eye Surgery Procedure
• The first step of the procedure is to create a thin circular flap in the
cornea of the eye,
• That is done with the help of a instrument known as microkeratome.
• With the help of excimer laser a tissue is accessed that lies beneath the
cornea .
• Next the surgeon marks the areas of incisions for performing the
procedure.
Lasik Eye Surgery Procedure
• Next the surgeon marks the areas of incisions for
performing the procedure.
• Special eye drops are used by surgeon in order to
anesthetize the eye before performing the procedure.
• The objective of the surgery is to improve vision of
people suffering from farsightedness.
PRK Verses LASIK

• Major difference between PRK and LASIK is that in the case of PRK the
removal of epithelium which is the outermost corneal cell layer is
undertaken.
• The removal is performed before the surgery.
• It takes three to five days in the process of regrowth of the cell layer.
PRK Verses LASIK

• An instrument called Microkeratome is used to create a

tissue layer in the LASIK procedure.
• In the procedure of PRK, the contact lenses are worn by
the candidate for a few weeks to help in the process of
healing.
• Both the procedures PRK and LASIK have excellent
outcomes with respect to vision clarity.
Difference Between LASIK and Lasek Eye Surgery

• Major difference lies in the way of accessing the eye of the

candidate when the procedure is performed.
• In case of LASIK surgery the corneal flap that is created in the
eye of the candidate lifts away the thicker outer later of the eye.
• Then underneath the tissue of eye the laser is applied in order to
replace the flap.
Difference Between LASIK and Lasek Eye Surgery

• Whereas no flap is created in the case of Lasek

surgery.
• Just the topmost layer of the cornea is
loosened and is moved aside.
• Once the procedure is performed the outer
layer (Epithelium) is placed completely.
• It combines methods from LASIK and PRK
Some of the Benefits of Lasik Eye Surgery

1. Candidate gets clearer vision and gets rid of corrective

eyeglasses.
2. LASIK eye surgery is extremely useful to correct and improve
vision problem of many patients.
3. The time duration of the recovery is less and procedure does not
involves stitches or bandages.
4. Little or no pain is involved in LASIK eye surgery
5. Immediate outcomes
